Montréal, November 29th, 2024 – The World Junior Diving Championships are ongoing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Quebec’s Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre, who captured bronze in the 10 m event on Tuesday, placed sixth in the boys’ 14-15 age group 3 m event with a cumulative score of 427.10 points.
“It was a very long and difficult day for me, both mentally and physically. I started very early at the pool, and it took me a long time to wake up and get my technique right before entering the preliminaries”, admitted Lisé-Coderre.
After taking the third spot in the preliminary round, the Quebecer struggled on his first dive of the final but recovered well to finish sixth in the session won by Germany’s Finn Awe (474.15).
“In the preliminaries, I didn’t necessarily execute the best basic dives. That certainly put me a little further back ahead of the final. However, I came back strong in the optional dives to finish in sixth place. That was perhaps the highlight of the day”, he added.
“It may not have been the result I wanted, but I have no regrets because I gave it my all and I don’t think I could have done any better in today’s circumstances.”
Ukrainians Valerri Malieiev (470.10) and Dmytro Stepanov (441.25) completed the podium.
Also competing in this final, Kash Tarasoff (Saskatchewan) took 8th place with 403.85 points. The Canadian, who had placed fifth in the 14-15 age group 10 m event, finished 12th in the morning preliminaries and knabbed the final qualifying spot granting access to the decisive round.
On the girls’ side, Renee Batalla (British Columbia) and Mathilde Laberge (Quebec) were in action today in the 16-18 age group 10 m final.
Despite not being at the top of her game, Batalla, who had placed sixth in qualifying, took seventh place with 378.75 points. “Before the final, I was feeling really anxious […] I just tried to give everything I had and that’s how I approached not only the finals, but also the preliminaries,” revealed Batalla.
“Ultimately, I made some good dives during the finals. I enjoyed the experience, and it was an interesting way to end my junior career,” she continued.
After placing eighth in qualifying, her teammate Mathilde Laberge finished ninth with a total of 359.75 points.
China’s Nan Xu dominated the session with 465.75 points. Great Britain’s Maisie Bond took silver (439.80) and Colombia’s Mariana Osorio won bronze (400.80).
The action resumes on Saturday at the World Junior Championships. Mackenzie-Mai Van-Houtte-Cachero (Quebec) and Lila Gokiert (Alberta) will try to qualify for the 14-15 age group 3 m final, while Samuel Talbot (Quebec) and Dean Dacoulis-Calfacacos (Quebec) will be looking to do the same in the 16-18 age group 10 m platform competition.
