Swimming Canada partners with USA Swimming for 2025 Open Water National Champs

Swimming Canada will be selecting its open water team for next year’s World Aquatics Championships at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships, scheduled to take place from April 4-6, 2025, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.

The event will serve as the selection meet for both the men’s and women’s teams representing Canada at the world championships Aquatics Championships in Singapore, set for July 11-Aug. 3, 2025. The 10-km race, scheduled for April 4, will act as the official selection event, while other distances during the competition will provide athletes with additional racing experiences.

“We are thrilled to announce that in 2025, we will be moving our trials to Florida in collaboration with USA Swimming. Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, with its world-class rowing basin, provides ideal conditions for our athletes to perform at their peak. The opportunity to compete against top American swimmers promises an exciting, high-calibre event with intense competition. Additionally, the inclusion of various distances and age groups offers invaluable experience for our younger swimmers, preparing them for future success.”

This event will replace the stand-alone Canadian Open Water Swimming Trials, which have previously been held on Grand Cayman.

“Swimming Canada extends its heartfelt thanks to our partners with the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association for their support of the open water program over the years,” said Swimming Canada Acting CEO Suzanne Paulins. “We are grateful to the Cayman Islands for their incredible hospitality in hosting our trials in the past. Their contribution has played a key role in the development of our open water athletes.”

Swimming Canada will continue to offer the Open Water Swimming Festival. The 2025 edition is set for Aug. 16-17 at the Montreal Olympic Basin. The event combines opportunities for competitive open water racing, as well as a mass participation event.

The event lineup is part of Swimming Canada’s “Canadian Way” event hosting strategy through to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
