Calgary, AB. (Jan 21, 2024) —For the second day in a row Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) won the women’s
race at the redtag.ca FIS Ski Cross World Cup at Nakiska, Alberta. Schmidt becomes the first women to finish first in back-to-back races on Canadian snow since Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) won five in row between 2012 and 2017. Brittany Phelan (Mont-Tremblant, QC) stood on the podium with Schmidt today in third place securing her 14th career podium.
This is Schmidt’s fourth career podium and comes in her 40th World Cup start. Today’s win vaults Schmidt into second place in the standings just 11 points out of first place.
“I’m a little speechless,” said Schmidt. “I feels pretty awesome to win back to back in front of family and friends. This is the first time that I’ve been on the podium with Britt and that helps make this day, and this whole weekend, very special.”
“I’m not the quickest starter,” said Phelan. “It was really hard to pass on this course so I had to battle all day. It’s always special to race at home and I’m super stoked to be on the podium today with Hannah.”
Thompson won today’s small final finishing fifth, while India Sherret (Cranbrook, BC) was sixth to give Canada four women in the top six. Other women Canadian women racing today were Abby McEwen
(Edmonton, AB) who placed 10th and Emeline Bennett (North Vancouver, BC) who was 13th.
