Calgary, AB. (Dec 28, 2023) — Canada’s Cameron Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) raced to third place today at the FIS Ski World Cup men’s downhill in Bormio, Italy. This is Alexander’s second career World Cup downhill podium, his first being a win in Kvitfjell (NOR) in March of 2022, he also won bronze in the downhill at last year’s World Championships.

Also today Valérie Grenier (St. Isidore, ON) put together two good runs to take fourth at the FIS Ski World Cup women’s giant slalom in Lienz, Austria. Grenier has placed in the top eight in all five giant slalom (GS) races this season, and in the top 15 in the last 12 GS’s over the last calendar year.

“Fourth place stings a little because you are so close to the podium, but it was a good day,” said a grinning Grenier. “I struggled on the first run like a lot of people, but I am very happy with my second run. It was a super fun run; I was really going for it and it felt good to be in the leaders chair for a bit. I’m feeling confident in my skiing the last few months, I feel that I can recover from my mistakes and that confidence is helping me be consistent.”

On the Stelvio course, one of the most challenging downhill races of the season, Alexander was fifth out of the gate and stood second until the next racer bumped him to third. From there Alexander watched 52 other racers try to knock him off the podium.

“It feels really good to be able get a podium on a track like this,” said a smiling Alexander. “This track is such a battle and a fight the whole way down it’s rewarding to stand on the podium here. It’s been a strong start to the season and that’s really thanks to the great prep the team has had. We are all really pushing each other super hard and we’re ready to continue skiing fast.”

James Crawford (Toronto, ON) took eighth today for his fourth top eight in four speed events this season. Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC) finished 46th and Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) was 51st. Kyle Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) did not start today’s race.

Othe Canadian women racing in Lienz (AUT) were Cassidy Gray (Panorama, BC) who finished 41st and didn’t advance to the second run, while Britt Richardson (Canmore, AB) and Sarah Bennett (Stoneham, QC) didn’t finish the first run.
