Nova Scotia’s Commander Nicole Robichaud and National Women’s Hockey Team Coach Troy Ryan to Headline 2023 SPIN Summit Speakers in Halifax

HALIFAX—Two Nova Scotian’s – Royal Canadian Navy Commander, Nicole Robichaud, along with the bench-boss of Canada’s gold-medal winning women’s hockey team, Troy Ryan – will address the world of sport science and research when they headline a notable list of presenters at the annual SPort INnovation (SPIN) Summit, in Halifax, December 5-7.

Sport Scientist Canada, along with the Canadian Sport Institute Atlantic, have assembled more than 20 speakers with diverse backgrounds in sports and business while teaming up to bring the prestigious three-day sport science, medicine and innovation conference to the east coast for just the second time in the event’s 18-year-history.

Commander Robichaud, who is one of four female ship Commanders in the Royal Canadian Navy, will deliver a keynote on December 7 during the Awards Luncheon. In 2021, Commander Robichaud assumed Command of HMCS Margaret Brooke where her crew faced the challenges of introducing a new class of ship and operating in the Arctic. She will draw similarities in her career, having the opportunity to work with some of the most driven and loyal sailors with athletes and coaches chasing their performance goals.

Troy Ryan will close out the three-day event with a presentation on how to be a strong teammate working in a high-performance Integrated Support Team. With more than 25 years coaching hockey, Ryan was an assistant coach for Canada’s silver-medal winning women’s team at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang before taking the head coaching role, and guiding the Canadian women to a gold medal at 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. Ryan prides himself on providing a safe place for athletes and staff to reach their full potential while being part of the decision-making process and enjoying the daily training environment.

Registration to attend all three days of workshops, symposia and presentations is now open at SPIN Summit 2023.

“The CSI Atlantic is thrilled to host the 2023 SPIN Summit in The Bluenoser Province.  Not only will we have some of the top performance science experts and innovators from across the country in Halifax, but we will also be able to provide opportunities for local experts, coaches and students to interact and learn from an incredible lineup of speakers who have performed under some of the most immense pressure in their respective industries,” said Ken Bagnell, President and CEO of CSI Atlantic.

The impressive list of presentations will also include an inspirational address from Ray Zahab who completed a winter crossing of Baffin Island through the Paalik Valley between chemotherapy treatments. Scott Livingston, a highly respected sport scientist who will deliver a highly informative presentation on the neurological aspects of conditioning.
