BERLIN, GER- Competition has continued in Berlin with all Canadian Athletes taking to the field for the Team Rounds and Mixed Team on Wednesday and individual elimination match play thursday. Both days saw some good performance, culminating in some exciting match ups in both the recurve and compound individual matchplay. At the end of the day, Eric Peters (ON) moved through the rounds to qualify into the top 8 and into the quarter-finals on Sunday.
All three of the recurve men, the three compound men and two recurve women had qualified to advance into the elimination rounds. The conditions on the field were some of the worst this week, but Canada’s archers fought hard. Peters overtook sweden’s Kaj Jöberg in the 1/48 round decisively over three matches 6-0, with teammate Crispin Duenas winning against his opponent Pit Klein of Luxembourg 6-2. Both archers proceeded to the 1/24 round where again they prevailed, with Peters winning against Maximilian Weckmueller of Germany 6-2. Duenas faced Spain’s Andres Temino to win 6-4. Devaang Gupta also advanced after a strong match against Matyas Laszlo Balogh of Hungary 6-0. He was defeated in the next 1/24 round against Antti Tekoniemi of Finland. In Women’s Kristine Esebua moved past the 1/48 after defeating Mexico’s Aida Roman in a tight set finishing 6-4, to advance to win against Ukraine’s Anastasia Pavlova 7-1 and ultimately to face Zana Pintaric of Slovenia who won the match 6-2. Virgine Chenier lost her set against Irati Unamunzaga Altuna of Spain.
Duenas had a strong match up in the 1/16 round to face former World Champion Brady Ellison of the USA, trading wins back and forth and tying ultimately forcing two tie-breaks to settle the match, with Elison just edging him out. Peters also faced stiff competition against Korea’s Woo Seok Lee, with strong consistent performances to win 7-3. The day finished with Peter’s facing Germany’s Florian Unruh to win the match 6-4 and advancing to the quarter finals.
“What an amazing day this was. Not just because we made it to the finals day with Eric Peters, but also because all our archers executed the plan perfectly,” said Ron van der Hoff, National Coach Advisor. “Seeing them shoot the way they did in these challenging conditions was amazing. They can all be very proud.”
These performances were not the only great performances of the day. In compound the three men also had a good day led by team veteran Andrew Fagan (ON) who performed with a personal best to advance to the 1/16th round following two well fought matches. It was a close competition in the first match against Jaewon Yang of Korea shooting 140-140 and going to a tie break, allowing him to advance to the 1/24 round against Cheng-Jui Yang of Chinese Taipei, where again he forced a tie-break to take the win. He next faced Sebastian Arenas of Colombia, just edging him out for the win with 140-139. In his final round he faced Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands, but lost 142-149.
“Today was thrilling. At the toughest competition in the World, we showed up in fine fashion:, said team coach Duncan Crawford.” The compound guys did awesome as well, leading in all of their matches at some point. Cam and Tristan lost nail biters. Andrew went on to win consecutive one arrow shoot offs against incredible competition. He ended up in the 1/8 against Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands. Andrew shot extremely well, but Mike shot a near perfect 149/150. At one point in the match it was raining and blowing that hard that it was almost impossible to see the arrows in the targets. This is Andrew’s highest finish ever at a World Championship.”
The competition will continue with the team and compound finals tomorrow and Saturday, and we will see Eric compete against Steve Wijler of the Netherlands on Sunday.
