LIMERICK, IE – It was the mixed team competition in the spotlight today at the World Archery Youth Championships. Canada had three teams in action today, in the recurve U18 mixed team and the compound U18 and U21 mixed teams.
The first matchup featured the U18 recurve mixed team. The Canadian pair of Janna Hawash and Kurtis Ng shot against Megan Havers and Archie Bromley of Great Britain. While the Canadians gave all they had to the match, it was unfortunately not enough to overcome the 9th-ranked team.
On the U18 compound side, the pairing of Madelynn Holkema and Keegan Crawford stepped up to the line to shoot against another Great Britain pairing of Isabella Bruguier and Ioan Rees. The match was incredibly close, with no ends being decided by more than two points. At the conclusion of the third end, the Canadians were up by one point; unfortunately, they were unable to hold onto the lead and lost the match by one point, with a final score of 143-142.
The final team on the line today was the U21 compound mixed team, made up of Chyler Sanders and Adam Berge. The Canadians were able to hold the lead for the first half of the match, but then unfortunately lost the match with a score of 137-145.
“Today, the conditions continued to challenge our archers,” says Duncan Crawford, one of the coaches. “We had leads in both matches, but in both the U18 and U21 compound, we fell just short. A one point deficit was the final result against Great Britain in U18, and an unfortunate gusty miss cost us a lead against Italy [in U21]. The U21 recurve mixed team had a tough one against Great Britain and unfortunately went out in straight sets. We had a fun and productive training session in the afternoon with all athletes and are looking forward to team rounds tomorrow morning.”
The competition continues tomorrow with the compound team elimination rounds, with Canada up first against Slovakia in the U18 men’s team division at 9:10 a.m. local time (4:10 a.m. ET).
