OTTAWA, ON – This past weekend, the recurve selection camp welcomed strong archers to Moyer’s Landing to determine who will represent Canada at the 2023 World Archery Youth Championships in Limerick, Ireland, taking place in early July.
The U18 male athletes are:
- Kurtis Ng (ON)
- Ryder Wilson (MB)
- Sahil Sahota (AB)
The U18 female athletes are:
- Audrey Khan Arevalo (ON)
- Zohy Wilson (ON)
- Janna Hawash (ON)
The U21 male athlete is:
- Dawson Molitor (AB)
The U21 female athlete is:
- Natalee Chan (ON)
Athletes were nominated if they achieved a top three finish at the selection camp, as well as meeting the posted Minimum Qualification Score (MQS), which is equivalent to the arrow average value outlined in Archery Canada’s Podium Result Track (PRT) level, based on their age as of December 31 in the year that the score was shot. Archery Canada also reserved the right to nominate athletes who did not achieve the MQS in order to complete a team for participation in either the team or mixed team round.
While most of the athletes’ experience is at the national level, including both Canada Cups and the Canadian Championships, there are a few athletes who boast significant experience. Janna Hawash finished in sixth place at the 2022 Youth and Masters Pan Am Championships (YMPAC), and all the other U18 athletes will be shooting at their first international event in Limerick. Their competition experience has prepared them well, with Ryder Wilson competing in the 2023 Canada Winter Games and Audrey Khan Arevalo competing in USAT events as most of the NextGen team, such as the Arizona and Gator Cup this year and Buckeye Classic last year.
There isn’t a large contingent of U21 recurve athletes attending, but both Natalee Chan and Dawson Molitor bring continental experience with them. They competed in the U21 female and male recurve divisions, respectively, and will aim to better their results in Ireland this summer.
The World Archery Youth Championships includes both the U21 and U18 age categories, with both the recurve and compound categories. Archery Canada looks forward to this event with great anticipation, as the organization prepares to host the 2025 edition of the event in Winnipeg, MB. The athletes will get a chance to showcase and strengthen their skills ahead of striving to make Team Canada in two years.
