Alexander Races to Bronze in World Championships Downhill

Calgary, Alta. (February 12, 2023) — In his first ever world championship race, Cameron Alexander (North
Vancouver, BC) captured a bronze medal for Canada in today’s men’s downhill at the 2023 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Courchevel and Méribel, France. Today’s bronze comes just over 11 months after Alexander finished first in a World Cup downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway.

On another blue bird day on the challenging l’Éclipse track in Courchevel, Alexander started 20th and delivered a solid run from top to bottom. Crossing the finish line in third, bumping his teammate James ‘Jack’ Crawford (Toronto, ON) to fourth, Alexander watched nervously as the remainder of the field tried to knock him off the podium. Crawford, racing two days after his gold medal performance in the super-G, finished fifth for his second top 5 of these world championships.

“This means everything,” said a beaming Alexander. “I’m very, very happy, it’s the greatest feeling in the world. The guys here are so fast, I knew that I had to bring my best skiing and to push all the way down. I was talking to myself towards the end, making sure that I kept pushing.”

“Jack’s gold in the super-G gave us all confidence,” added Alexander. “Our group really pushes each other in training and his win showed us that our best skiing has a shot at the podium. We’ve all been working so hard for so long; I know that it’s just a matter of time for the rest of the guys. Going to celebrate this and looking forward to building on it.”

After an 11th place finish in the super-G at these world championships, Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) was 30th in today’s downhill and Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC), who finished second in the final downhill training, did not finish today’s race.

Championship racing continues on Tuesday February 14th with the team parallel and wraps up with the men’s slalom on Sunday February 19th.  For more information on the world championships, including the full schedule, please visit the FIS website at fis-ski.com.
