January 28, 2023 (Victoria) – Bryden Hattie added another national title to his list of achievements by winning the gold medal on 1 m springboard Saturday at the Saanich Commonwealth Place, British Columbia. On the women’s side, Éloïse Bélanger topped the podium at the Canadian Winter Championships in the Women’s 10 m event.
Victoria’s Bryden Hattie completed a perfect weekend by winning the gold medal on 1 m with a score of 398.70.
“I’m really happy! I’m proud of the consistency of my dives this weekend in both of my springboard competitions,” said the 21-year-old diver.
“A lot of things are coming up for me this season, so this is a really good way to start 2023. I’m already looking forward to what’s next,” added the athlete who also won gold on 3 m springboard on Friday.
Victor Povzner had the second best score of the competition with 387.90. As he was participating in the event as a guest, he shared the second step of the podium with Cédric Fofana from Quebec. The representative of the CAMO diving club obtained a score of 354.20.
Also from the CAMO diving club, Olivier Gauthier took the bronze medal. The Quebecer obtained a total of 352.35 points.
In the women’s event, Éloïse Bélanger won her first national title on the platform. The Quebecer won the competition with a score of 334.10.
“I couldn’t be happier than this. It’s really the culmination of a lot of hard work. There are no words to describe how happy I am,” said the CAMO diving club representative.
“I would say that my fourth dive, the front three and a half, caused me some problems in the last few weeks, so I’m happy that I was able to do it during the final. I’m also proud to have done well on my last dive because I find it mentally difficult. It ended the competition well and it put me on the top step of the podium,” added the 28-year-old.
Bélanger beat out local representative Renée Batalla, who held the title in this event. Batalla finished the competition in second place with a score of 331.65.
Celina Toth, also from the Boardworks Diving Club, took third place with 316.96 points.
Sunday will be the final day of the Winter Nationals with the women’s 3m and men’s 10m on the schedule.
