January 27, 2023 (Victoria) – Bryden Hattie and Mia Vallée stood atop the podium on the first day of the Winter National Championships at the Saanich Commonwealth Place, BC, on Friday.
Quebec’s Mia Vallée dominated the competition in the women’s 1m. She finished the day with a total of 296.35 points and was able to retain her national championship title from last summer.
“It’s really awesome. It’s a great way to start the 2023 season and I am excited for the 3m event on Sunday. I was nervous before the competition started, but now I feel good,” she said.
She was particularly proud of her second dive, a two and a half tuck.
“I don’t think I’ve ever done it that well. I’ve never had more than 7.5’s on that dive and today I got an 8.5. It was clearly my best moment of the competition so far,” explained the 21-year-old diver.
Also from Quebec, Pamela Ware took the second step of the podium. The athlete representing the CAMO Diving Club earned a total of 275.55 points for her five dives.
Earlier in the morning, she had taken the top spot in the preliminary round.
The bronze medal was won by Aimee Wilson of Calgary with a score of 264.85.
In the men’s 3m, Bryden Hattie defended his title as national champion. He accumulated a total of 474.50 points for his six dives and moved to the top of the leaderboard in the final.
“I’m really happy. It was even better than I expected,” exclaimed Hattie.
He had also dominated the preliminaries presented earlier in the morning.
“I had a really good preliminaries, but I told myself before the final that I had to put that aside. I told myself I was going to go into the final, breathe and take it dive by dive. That’s what I did and the result is what I wanted so I’m very happy,” explained the British Columbian.
Thomas Ciprick of the Pointe-Claire Diving Club was second with 432.30 points. Cedric Fofana of the CAMO Diving Club placed third with a score of 393.60.
The Winter Nationals continue on Saturday with the women’s 10 m and men’s 1 m.
