Toronto, Ontario (January 10, 2023) – Hundreds of athletes from across Canada came together at the
Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, Ontario from January 4th to 7th, 2023 to compete for the title of
national champion at the 2023 Canadian National Taekwondo Championships.
The event featured Canada’s best black belt athletes from both Kyorugi and Poomsae disciplines. All
competing athletes were ten years of age or older. Athletes that earned the gold medal were declared
the National Champion, with most securing an opportunity to represent Canada on 2023 National
Teams. Tokyo 2020 athlete, Skylar Park, was in attendance at the event and showed her support for
fellow Canadian athletes. Based on her Olympic and World Rankings, Park earned an automatic
qualification to the Senior Kyorugi National Team for the 2023 season. Senior Kyorugi National
Champions also participated in Olympic Weight fight-offs for an opportunity to attend the Qualification
Tournament for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Taekwondo Canada’s Executive Director David Harris shared his thoughts on the event, “The 2023
Championships in Toronto were a complete success for Taekwondo Canada. Athletes from across
Canada came together to form what we hope will be one of our most competitive national teams ever.
We look forward to watching them compete on the world stage.”
The talent across the country was evident with numerous medalists and strong showings from Québec
and Ontario, as well as Maritime and Western provinces earning a number of national champions.
