Two national records for Acevedo as Canadians wrap up strong World Cup start

BERLIN â€“ After three days of racing, Canadian swimmers concluded the first leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup tour with ten top 3 finishes.

Javier Acevedo had an impressive weekend of races. The Toronto native broke two Canadian records, one in the men’s 50-m backstroke with a time of 23.24 and one in the men’s 100-m backstroke with a time of 50.16. Acevedo also competed in the men’s 100-m medley where he finished third with a time of 51.74.

On Saturday, Bailey Andison swam her way to a third-place finish in the women’s 400-m medley with a time of 4.31.66.

Andison noted that the transitions into and off the walls were especially important to her success when competing in the 400-m race in a short course pool. “It’s definitely a different race going from long course to short course. You have to have good walls and transitions in short course. Luckily, that’s what I excel at, so I really enjoy swimming the 400-m short course,” she said.

The Perth Stingrays Aquatic Club product also competed in the women’s 200-m medley where she placed sixth with a time of 2.08.50.

LaSalle, Ont., native Kylie Masse finished Top 3 in all of her finals this weekend, winning the women’s 50-m backstroke, and finishing second in both the 100-m and 200-m backstroke. Beata Nelson won the 100 in 56.03, and took the 200 in 2:02.59.

Even with top talent on either side of her, Masse stayed focused on her own race.

“They push me to continue to try and improve, but when it comes down to race time I try to just focus on my strengths,” she said after the 100-m final.

Competing alongside Masse, Ingrid Wilm of Calgary’s Cascade Swim Club also found herself in the Top 3 finishers of each of her races. Wilm finished second in the women’s 50-m backstroke, and third in the 100 and 200.

Now that races have concluded for the weekend, Canadian swimmers look ahead to the next leg of the tour which takes place in Toronto from Oct. 28-30.

“I’m really excited to see the crowd and feel the energy in our home country. I’ve never done an international competition in Canada so I’m pretty excited,” said Wilm when asked about the upcoming Toronto event.

The 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup will finish with a third three-day leg in Indianapolis Nov. 3-5.
