Triathlon Canada Taps Phil Dunne for High-Performance Director Role

Dunne brings extensive sport science, long-term athlete development, Olympic and Paralympic experience to HPD position

VICTORIA— With a deeply rooted background in sport science and leadership, Phil Dunne joins Triathlon Canada effective September 26, 2022, as High-Performance Director with the ultimate goal of developing the sport’s Olympic and Paralympic programs to allow more Canadians athletes to reach the international podium.

In previous roles within Sport Institutes in Canada and Ireland, as well as with the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and Own the Podium (OTP), Dunne has honed his skills working with and leading multi-disciplinary, integrated support teams across a range of Olympic and Paralympic programs and events. In his most recent role at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, he was tasked with supporting targeted sports in building successful performance pathways for both athletes and coaches to support them in their development and progress towards the podium.

“Having observed both of Canada’s Triathlon programs – Olympic and Paralympic – from a distance in my previous roles, I am very excited to start working with the high performance team to deliver the resources and support the athletes and coaches need to achieve our goals,” said Dunne, who brings extensive experience working with athletes in various sports from the club to provincial to elite levels.“The community must work together if we want to achieve our collective goals. Together, with the support of our provincial sport organizations and entire staff, the focus will be to support and sustain podium performances throughout the performance pathway – from the grassroots level to our Olympic and Paralympic best – help them reach their full potential in addition to strengthening the pool of athletes and coaches across the country.”

Dunne’s experience at the provincial, national, and elite international level – both as a practitioner and administrator – has been built on a philosophy of relationship-building and mentorship. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science from the University of Wales, and he completed his Masters in Sport Performance Analysis at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

“Phil brings a breadth of skills and experience in sport science, sports medicine, and multi-sport Games planning and delivery, but just as importantly, his last four years have been spent working very closely with key partners within the Canadian sport system,” said Joe Morissette, Chief Executive Officer, Triathlon Canada. “His approach will benefit the entire Triathlon Canada Nation, and we look forward to having him on our team as we continue to build towards Paris 2024 and beyond.”

Dunne’s new role will see him relocate to Triathlon Canada’s headquarters in Victoria by end-of-year.

Triathlon Canada is the governing body of the sport in the country. Triathlon Canada’s more than 22,000members include athletes, coaches and officials from the grassroots to elite levels.
