Individual Compound Eliminations – Yankton 2021

YANKTON, USA – It was a big day in Yankton, with all of Canada’s representatives stepping up to take a shot. The day started with the men’s and women’s compound competition.

Due to his impressive 3rd-place ranking in the qualification round, Chris Perkins earned a bye to the 1/16 finals and faced 30th-ranked Julio Varillas from Guatemala. Though he was one point behind for the first three ends, he pulled ahead in end 4 to win the match with a score of 147-145. His next opponent was Mario Vavro from Croatia. Perkins got a score of 147 and a win against Vavro, meaning that he advances to face Robin Jaatma from Estonia in the quarterfinals on Saturday September 25 at 3:26 p.m. EST. With a top 8 finish, he secures Canada a spot at the World Games in July 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama.

In the 1/48 finals, Jamie Brehaut shot against Antonio Hidalgo from Mexico, unfortunately losing the match (141-150), while his opponent shot a perfect match. Andrew Fagan faced Otgonbayar Lkhamjav from Mongolia and with only two of his 15 arrows scoring under 10, Fagan won the match and moved on to face Viktor Kalashnikov from the RAF in the 1/24 finals. In a very close match, Fagan lost to Kalashnikov by 1 point, scoring 60 points in the last two ends to close what was a 3-point gap.

“I feel like I shot well today, but just got edged out at the end,” commented Fagan. “We were fairly equally matched; he just had a better day.”

Fiona McClean shot against Giselle Paulina Zaandam de Sousa from Portugal in her first individual elimination round and lost by only one point (139-140)! She does not advance but had a close match in both the individual compound and mixed team competitions.
