Canada Soccer Announces Davies ruled out of Wednesday FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Toronto

Alphonso Davies will miss the third match of the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers after he was hurt in the away USA-Canada match on Sunday 5 September in Nashville. Davies will return to his club FC Bayern München to continue his recovery and will not be in the lineup for the Wednesday 8 September sold out home match against El Salvador in Toronto.

Davies got an important assist on Cyle Larin’s 1-1 equalizer in the Sunday night match against USA, Canada’s first away point against USA in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers since 1980. The assist was Davies’ sixth of the 2021 season, a new record for Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team.

Canada have opened FIFA World Cup Qualifiers unbeaten with back-to-back 1:1 draws against Honduras and USA. Canada are one of eight nations in the Concacaf Final Round with 14 matches to be played from September 2021 to March 2022. From the Concacaf Final Round final standings, the top-three nations automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 while the fourth-best nation advances to an inter-continental playoff for additional FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
