OVERVIEW
Canada Basketball is seeking a dynamic and experienced Women’s NextGen Lead & U17 National Team Assistant Coach to drive the development of emerging basketball talent along the athlete high performance pathway. This role will focus on talent identification, player development, and fostering strong relationships with athletes, coaches, and other key stakeholders. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the transition from youth development to national team competition, helping to shape the future of women’s basketball in Canada.
As the NextGen Lead, you will be responsible for identifying and nurturing top-tier talent, developing athletes’ skills, and ensuring alignment with our national team strategies. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the next generation of basketball players, guiding them through their journey toward national and international competition.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Head of Women’s High Performance of Canada Basketball, and working closely with senior staff from all departments, the new NextGen Lead & U17 National Team Assistant Coach will:
Collaborate with PTSOs, coaches, and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive approach to talent identification across various age groups.
- Contribute to coaching for the Junior Academy, U16, and U17 National Teams, focusing on skill development, tactical awareness, and overall player growth.
- Align the U16/U17 National Teams’ preparation with the national program’s long-term goals, ensuring athletes are equipped for future competition at the national and international levels.
- Work closely with senior national team coaches to integrate key learnings from 5v5 and 3×3 format into the player development process.
- Contribute to the development of WHP NextGen depth chart and athlete monitoring system
- Design and implement age-appropriate training plans, in collaboration with our IST/PSRI, that align with long-term development goals, ensuring athletes are prepared for the national team pipeline.
- Assist in the creation of IPPs, IPP templates, and supplementary video for NextGen targeted athletes
- Perform video and statistical components for the NextGen WNT including but not limited to practice, competition, individual players, scouting and research projects
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with athletes, coaches, parents, and external partners to foster a supportive and collaborative environment for player development.
- Engage with local clubs, schools, and organizations to expand the talent pool and encourage growth in youth basketball.
- Ensure all coaching strategies and player development align with the tactical and strategic needs of the 3×3 system of play.
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of 5 years coaching experience, or equivalent, in basketball, with a focus on youth development and national-level competition.
- Strong understanding of player development at various stages, including technical, tactical, and psychological aspects of growth.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with athletes, families, and partners.
- A relevant coaching certification (e.g., NCCP), or equivalent experience.
