Reporting to the Director, Sport Business & Sustainability, the Manager, Athlete Marketing and Olympian Legacy (AMOL) role provides leadership and expertise and brings a strategic lens to streamlined and efficient day-to-day management of athlete engagement across all COC and Canadian Olympic Foundation departments.
The Athlete Marketing and Olympian Legacy strategies fulfill COC’s mission of promoting the values and principles of Olympism and leading the achievement of the Canadian Olympic Team’s success. Connecting athletes with fans, partners, and communities is a key pillar to promote the Olympic Movement and growing the profile and impact of Olympians.
LOCATION
This position will be located in one of the COC’s offices (Montreal, QC, at 500 René-Lévesque Boulevard West; or in Toronto, ON at 250 Yonge St. Suite 3000). We offer a hybrid work model that allows for up to two days of remote work each week.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES
Strategy, Planning and Oversight
- Lead the strategy development and delivery of the Athlete Marketing and Olympian Legacy portfolio that supports broader Brand & Commercial and ultimately organizational objectives.
- Oversee AMOL team members performance and completion of deliverables
- Support the personal and professional development goals of the team
- Track and report on the AMOL budget and risks, with oversight from the Director, Sport Business & Sustainability
- Report on key initiatives to Brand & Commercial Leadership as required.
Athlete Marketing and Olympian Legacy
- Serve as a go-to-resource for internal teams and key stakeholders regarding the athlete community, their stories and their potential fit for inclusion in COC related engagements
- rovide athlete marketing-as-a-service to the organization including defining policies & processes and facilitating requests for athlete engagements.
- Manage all enterprise-wide athlete requests from within the COC and from third parties as appropriate
- Establish and facilitate all requests with clear and effective tools, processes, and reporting
- Build, update and monitor Athlete Engagement protocol and athlete engagement compensation framework including internal rate card
- Provide recommendations that are fair and aligned with strategy & objectives of the given initiative
- Provide oversight and guidance including recommendations for Team Canada/COC athlete engagement opportunities such as but not limited to:
- COC Digital Content (Editorial or Original)
- COC Event Programming & Activations (I.e. Canada Olympic House, Team Canada FanFest)
- COC Brand Campaigns
- COC Community Engagement initiatives
- Marketing Partner Campaigns & Events
- COC/COF Hosting & Hospitality Events
- Pre and Post Games Event Initiatives as required
- Team Canada Celebrations
- Media Events
- Athlete liaison selection for Games Business Mission Team
- Other ad-hoc requests as required
- Act as Athlete Liaison for each of the initiatives listed above as required
- Facilitate athlete engagement requests from external parties, when relevant
- Develop and deliver internal education sessions on commercialization & athlete engagement
- Provide athlete insight, recommendations on COC policies and/or guidelines (i.e., Rule 40)
- Ensure fair & reasonable compensation for Team Canada Olympians and Olympic hopefuls on participating in paid appearances
- Oversee all communications with athletes (except those that are performance and sport-system specific) relative to engagement opportunities, marketing opportunities, grants, etc.
- Manage virtual Agent Summit strategy and delivery
- Support any additional revenue generation opportunities (i.e. grants) for athletes
- Build and roll-out the Athlete Engagement strategy and operational plan during Games both at host city and at home and collaborate with the different business units to ensure a smooth and secure experience for athletes.
- Collaborate with relevant teams at Games for the execution of the media athlete protocol
- Build, maintain and strengthen relationships and act as the COC point of contact with the following external stakeholders:
- Agent community
- World Olympians Association
- OLY Canada
- Athlete Liaison with the IOC Athlete Department
- CPC Athlete Marketing department
- COC Athlete Commission on Brand and Commercial purposes
- Manage the OLY Canada Legacy Programs (ex.: OLY Grant, OLY Rings and Games anniversary)
- Validate Team Canada Olympian’s status
- Prepare IOC athlete nominations as required
- Serve as COC OLY Canada Commission staff appointed member
- Support and facilitate the COC OLY Canada Commission’s initiatives
- In conjunction with the Athlete Relations Manager, work to ensure the COC is athlete-centric in its programs, policies and practices.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CRITICAL SKILLS
Education and Experience
- Olympian; familiarity with current and retired Olympians an asset
- Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in Sport Marketing, Communications or a related field
- 5 to 7 years’ experience including marketing-related management; sports marketing experience is preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Bilingualism required (French and English)
- Knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Sport System, Games environment, COC and international sport landscape;
- Knowledge and understanding of marketing, fundraising and digital concepts
- In-depth knowledge of Olympic sports and familiarity with Team Canada Olympians and hopefuls;
- Strong business acumen and stratic thinker,
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships both internally and externally with a diverse range of stakeholders, contexts, and audiences
- Ability to negotiate cross-functionally, listen, be organized and argue effectively
- Ability to adapt to change, with a problem-solving mindset
- Ability to manage multiple initiatives at the same time
- Ability to work with loose supervision;
- Strong time management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with the Office and Google Suite of tools
- Some knowledge of Mailchimp or other e-mail marketing services

Commitment
- Possibility of occasional national travel or infrequent international travel
- Travel for Games (approx. 3-4 weeks during Games window)
- Work some evenings and weekends
