Performance Services Core Objectives
The Performance Services business unit contributes to CSIO’s goals in the following ways:
- Recruitment, development, and retention of Performance Sciences (Sport Science and Sport Medicine disciplines), Research & Innovation Leaders & Practitioners
- Delivering best-in-class Performance Solutions for National & Provincial Sport Organizations (NSOs & PSOs)
- Delivering Partnership Management, Service Agreements, and Quality Assurance measures for our NSO performance partners
- Supporting a practitioner development pathway in alignment with Sport Scientist Canada (SSC)
Position Summary
The primary role of the PS2 Strength and Conditioning Coach is to support identified athletes, while helping to continuously expand and further develop this service area at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO). Duties include working closely with the CSIO Manager, Strength & Conditioning, plus Coaching and IST staff to focus on all areas of strength and conditioning. The PS2 Strength and Conditioning Coach supports athletes and coaches by providing tools and metrics to monitor and assess progress and collaborates with the Integrated Support Team (IST), to achieve a holistic approach to athlete development.
Position Responsibilities
Performance Support
- In collaboration with coaching staff and IST members, develop and deliver world-class strength & conditioning support in the daily training environment.
- In collaboration with coaching staff and IST members, develop individualized yearly training plans, focusing on targeted objectives for each athlete.
- Coach athletes in one on one or small group scenarios to teach proper lifting technique, to ensure maximum adaptations and a safe environment.
- Able to attend and provide comprehensive strength & conditioning support at identified competitions and training camps.
- Travel regionally as required to support identified and targeted athletes and their coaches with S&C expertise and support.
- Develop, deliver and refine physical preparation plans for identified targeted athletes.
- Implement thorough monitoring, tracking and testing processes to ensure that athletes are making the desired progress.
- Evaluate current research to broaden knowledge of the sport as well as general knowledge of trends and findings in the discipline.
- In collaboration with the IST and coaching staff, conduct, commission and collaborate on research and innovation projects to further the discipline.
- Provide comprehensive feedback (presentations, publications, reports) of results and interpretation to athletes, coaches and IST members as required.
- Work using a collaborative approach to tackle sport specific challenges and questions.
- Consult and refer specific athlete issues to relevant practitioners within the IST.
- Foster effective working relationship with sport coaches in order to understand coaching philosophy and sport program goals.
- Communicate effectively on a regular basis with other IST members to address performance related challenges from a multidisciplinary approach.
- Maintain the conditioning / organization of the Downsview High Performance Center.
- Supervise athlete training at the Downsview High Performance Center.

- Adhere to any professional codes of conduct appropriate to the profession or other codes of conduct that might be deemed applicable to sports science and sports medicine practitioners in general
- When appropriate, support other CSIO Strength & Conditioning Coaches in the daily training environment and remotely
- Be an active member of CSIO by participating in and/or presenting at staff meetings, other meetings and seminars as required
- Be a positive contributor to the Training Environments at CSIO
- Contribute to equipment and facility maintenance in the CSIO strength and conditioning gym
- Maintain a proactive approach to personal Professional Development and actively participate in CSIO professional development programs and processes
- Work with mentors to identify technical gaps and actively engage in skill development in all performance science disciplines (physiology, biomechanics, data science, therapy, nutrition, etc.)

Qualifications and Skills
Mandatory Requirements and Experience
- Graduate degree (e.g. M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics or related field preferred
- National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification or international equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a high-performance sport environment at the University level of higher (including National and International Competitions)
- Technical quality as a Physical Preparation Coach (exercise technique, selection, modification, coaching etc.)
- Consulting with Coaches and IST to plan Macro, Meso & Micro cycles, with quadrennial or multi-quadrennial perspective
- Defined data handling and management skills
- Professional liability insurance
- Vulnerable Sector Screening at time of hire
- Knowledge of the Canadian Sport System

Desired Experience, Qualifications and Skills
- Sport Scientist Canada High Performance Certified Practitioner (or working towards)
- Previous experience of working with developmental athletes is desirable.
- Advanced data handling and management skills, including experience utilizing data visualization tools and techniques
- Experience developing and implementing return to performance routines for athletes
- Experience working with youth athletes (12-18 years)
- Background as a high performance coach or athlete is an asset
- Bilingualism is an asset
