Archery Canada’s President, Allan Wills, steps down

This weekend marked the end of term for a devoted volunteer at Archery Canada. Allan Wills has been a long-serving and committed volunteer to the sport of archery in numerous capacities, both in Canada and internationally. Now, after 35 years serving on the Board of Directors of Archery Canada, he has completed his service and stepped down effective August 7, 2021, at the conclusion of the AGM. Mr. Wills has been a board member since 1985 and President of Archery Canada from 1991-2003 and from 2009 to present.

With Mr. Wills stepping down, the Board of Directors have formally appointed current Director-at-Large Aaron Bull to the vacant position of Archery Canada President on August 7 and until the next President election date in 2023.

Mr. Wills will continue to advise the Archery Canada Board over the next year and remain involved with the Foundation as the Chair of its board committee. We thank him for all that he has done for Canadian archery and wish him all the best in the years to come.

His contribution to the sport has received its fair share of recognition over the years, earning an impressive array of awards. Among these, in 1992 he was awarded the Canada 125 Medal for contribution to archery. In 2012, he was one of the 41 recipients selected by the COC for the prestigious honour of being presented with the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. That same year, he was also inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame. World Archery has awarded him the special Bronze Plaquette for his role as Chairman of the XXXIX World Championship 1997 Organizing Committee – only the 3rd time these Championships had been held in North America and first time in Canada. Following his Diamond Jubilee medal, World Archery praised him for “his strong leadership and direction, [for which] both Archery Canada and archery in Canada have and continue to grow and prosper. There is no doubt that the body of work that Al Wills has undertaken and contributed, to Archery Canada and the Canadian archery community, is extraordinary.”

Al has been an active archery judge in his province and club, judging local and provincial archery tournaments. For the majority of his time on the Board, Mr. Wills resided in British Columbia and was active with the BC Archery Association, who had supported him for the role as President, and who continue to value his involvement in the sport. “The archery community in British Columbia has been fortunate to have such a passionate and devoted individual residing in our province and promoting the sport,” said Sonia Schina, Executive Director of BC Archery. “We have benefitted from Al’s years of service with national and international organizations, and know that BC Archery can always rely on him to help with any projects. We are thankful for all he has done.”

His passion for the sport is infectious; his contribution to the sport has been far-reaching and second to none. He has always demonstrated a keen and genuine passion and love for archery, and in his many volunteer roles he has handled his responsibilities with tireless enthusiasm. Archery Canada has seen many accomplishments in the time that Mr. Wills has been involved at the Board. He has seen the capacity of Archery Canada grow over the years, helping to hire a professional staff to further develop the sport administratively and technically. He was a founding member of the Canadian Archery Foundation, which will begin to fulfill its mandate this year through new grants to support Canadian archers.

Le président de Tir à l’Arc Canada, Allan Wills, quitte son poste

Cette fin de semaine a marqué la fin du mandat d’un bénévole dévoué de Tir à l’Arc Canada. Allan Wills a été un bénévole de longue date et engagé dans le sport du tir à l’arc à plusieurs titres, tant au Canada qu’au niveau international. Maintenant, après 35 ans de service au sein du conseil d’administration de Tir à l’arc Canada, il se retire à compter du 7 août 2021, à la fin de l’AGA. M. Wills a été membre du conseil d’administration depuis 1985 et président de Tir à l’arc Canada de 1991 à 2003, et de 2009 à aujourd’hui.

Sa passion pour ce sport est contagieuse ; sa contribution à ce sport a été d’une grande portée et sans égal. Il a toujours fait preuve d’une passion et d’un amour sincères pour le tir à l’arc et, dans ses nombreux rôles de bénévole, il a assumé ses responsabilités avec un enthousiasme infatigable. Tir à l’Arc Canada a connu de nombreux succès depuis que M. Wills s’est impliqué au sein du Conseil. Il a vu la capacité de Tir à l’Arc Canada grandir au fil des ans, aidant à embaucher un personnel professionnel pour développer davantage le sport sur le plan administratif et technique. Il a été un membre fondateur de la Fondation canadienne de tir à l’arc, qui commencera à remplir son mandat cette année grâce à de nouvelles subventions pour soutenir les archères et archers canadiens.

Al a été un juge de tir à l’arc actif dans sa province et son club, jugeant des tournois de tir à l’arc locaux et provinciaux. Pendant la majeure partie de son mandat, M. Wills a résidé en Colombie-Britannique et a été actif au sein de la BC Archery Association, qui l’avait soutenu pour le rôle de président, et qui continue d’apprécier son implication dans le sport. « La communauté du tir à l’arc en Colombie-Britannique a eu la chance d’avoir un individu aussi passionné et dévoué résidant dans notre province et faisant la promotion du sport », a déclaré Sonia Schina, directrice générale de BC Archery. « Nous avons bénéficié des années de service d’Al auprès d’organisations nationales et internationales, et nous savons que BC Archery peut toujours compter sur lui pour l’aider dans tous ses projets. Nous sommes reconnaissants pour tout ce qu’il a fait. »

Sa contribution au sport a été reconnue à sa juste valeur au fil des ans et lui a valu un nombre impressionnant de récompenses. Parmi celles-ci, en 1992, il a reçu la Médaille 125 du Canada pour sa contribution au tir à l’arc. En 2012, il a été l’un des 41 lauréats sélectionnés par le COC pour le prestigieux honneur de recevoir la médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Elizabeth II. La même année, il a également été intronisé au Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame. La World Archery lui a décerné la Plaquette de bronze spéciale pour son rôle de président du comité organisateur des XXXIXe Championnats du monde de 1997 – ce n’était que la 3e fois que ces Championnats se déroulaient en Amérique du Nord et la première fois au Canada. À la suite de la remise de sa médaille du jubilé de diamant, World Archery l’a félicité pour « son leadership et sa direction solides, [grâce auxquels] Tir à l’arc Canada et le sport du tir à l’arc au Canada ont été en mesure de croître et de prospérer, et continuent de le faire. Il n’y a aucun doute que l’ensemble du travail qu’Al Wills a entrepris et sa contribution à Tir à l’arc Canada et à la communauté du tir à l’arc canadien, sont extraordinaires. »

M. Wills continuera à conseiller le Conseil d’administration de Tir à l’Arc Canada au cours de la prochaine année et restera impliqué dans la Fondation en tant que président de son comité du conseil. Nous le remercions pour tout ce qu’il a fait pour le tir à l’arc canadien et lui souhaitons le meilleur pour les années à venir.

Avec le départ de M. Wills, le conseil d’administration a officiellement nommé l’actuel directeur non désigné Aaron Bull au poste vacant de président de Tir à l’arc Canada le 7 août et ce jusqu’à la date de la prochaine élection du président en 2023.
