Canadian Elite Raquetball Athletes Celebrate Return to Sport

WINNIPEG, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 – This past weekend Racquetball Canada’s elite athletes celebrated a successful return to sport at the National Open Division Championships, competing for Canadian Championship titles and national team spots. Racquetball Québec and SaniSport hosted the tournament September 16 to 19 in Brossard.

Frédérique Lambert (Montréal) and Samuel Murray (Baie-Comeau) proved why they were ranked as the top tournament seeds in their respective singles events. They each captured gold without losing a game throughout the tournament. This is the third Canadian Open Singles Championship title for both athletes, with Murray winning his third consecutive title.

In the Women’s Open Singles event, Christine Keay (Winnipeg) finished the tournament in second place, with Alexis Iwaasa (Edmonton) taking third. Coby Iwaasa (Lethbridge) and Lee Connell (Saskatoon) finished second and third respectively in Men’s Open Singles.

Samuel Murray won double gold after also finishing on top of the podium in Men’s Open Doubles with partner Tommy Murray (Saint-Basile-le-Grand). This is a repeat for the brothers who also won gold at the last National Championships held in 2019. Partners Coby Iwaasa and Trevor Webb (Cambridge) finished in the silver medal position, while Lee Connell and Tanner Prentice (Macrorie, SK) won bronze.

In a new partnership, Christine Keay and Cassie Prentice (Macrorie, SK) won gold in the Women’s Open Doubles event, defeating Juliette Parent and Marjolaine Parent of Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, QC. Frédérique Lambert and Michèle Morissette (Baie-Comeau) won bronze.

The National Championships are the ultimate competition of the racquetball season in Canada, but this year there was more on the line than usual. With the cancellation of all of last season’s events, the championships served as the only tournament used to determine selection to national teams and the teams that will represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships and Pan Am Championships. Team announcements will be made in the coming days.

Les Athlètes d’élite Canadiens Célèbrent leur Retour au Racquetball

WINNIPEG, 20 SEPTEMBRE 2021 –  En fin de semaine dernière, les athlètes d’élite de Racquetball Canada ont célébré leur retour au sport lors des championnats nationaux catégorie ouverte, se disputant les titres de champions canadiens et les places au sein de l’équipe nationale. Racquetball Québec et SaniSport ont organisé le tournoi du 16 au 19 septembre à Brossard.

Frédérique Lambert (Montréal) et Samuel Murray (Baie-Comeau) ont prouvé pourquoi ils étaient classés parmi les meilleures têtes de série du tournoi dans leurs épreuves de simple respectives. Ils ont tous deux remporté l’or sans perdre un seul match tout au long du tournoi. Il s’agit du troisième titre du Championnat canadien ouvert en simple pour les deux athlètes, Murray remportant son troisième titre consécutif.

Dans l’épreuve du simple ouvert féminin, Christine Keay (Winnipeg) a terminé le tournoi à la deuxième place, tandis qu’Alexis Iwaasa (Edmonton) a pris la troisième place. Coby Iwaasa (Lethbridge) et Lee Connell (Saskatoon) ont terminé respectivement deuxième et troisième en simple ouvert masculin.

Samuel Murray a remporté une double médaille d’or après avoir également terminé sur la plus haute marche du podium en double ouvert masculin avec son partenaire Tommy Murray (Saint-Basile-le-Grand). Et c’est un doublé pour les deux frères qui ont également remporté l’or lors des derniers championnats nationaux organisés en 2019. Le duo composé de Coby Iwaasa et de Trevor Webb (Cambridge) s’est classé deuxième et a gagné la médaille d’argent, tandis que Lee Connell et Tanner Prentice (Macrorie, SK) ont remporté le bronze.

Christine Keay et Cassie Prentice (Macrorie, SK), qui faisaient équipe pour la première fois, ont remporté l’or dans l’épreuve du double féminin, en battant Juliette Parent et Marjolaine Parent de Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, QC. Frédérique Lambert et Michèle Morissette (Baie-Comeau) ont remporté le bronze.

Les Championnats canadiens sont la compétition ultime de la saison de racquetball au Canada, mais cette année, l’enjeu était plus important que d’habitude. Avec l’annulation de tous les événements de la saison dernière, ces Championnats ont été le seul tournoi utilisé pour déterminer la sélection des équipes nationales et des équipes qui représenteront le Canada aux prochains Championnats du monde et Championnats panaméricains. L’annonce des équipes sera faite plus tard ce mois-ci.
