World Champs underway for Canada’s women’s team

September 26, 2022: Canada opened its World Championship campaign with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-20) loss to Serbia and faces world number-one ranked USA on Monday evening in Arnhem, Netherlands.

“There are some positive things to build on. It’s a tough team to match up with in the first game of the World Championship but I thought we handled that pressure well…. we battled back but some untimely errors cost us,” said head coach Shannon Winzer.

“We have another tough match against the current Olympic Champions (USA). Your first game is also a bit nerve-racking, and it’s good to get that out of the way.  … I think you will see a lot more relaxed team moving forward – we’ll battle USA.”

On Sunday, Serbian captain Tijana Boskovic had a 23-point match, with 18 kills and a match-high five aces. The Serbians outscored Canada in kills (40 to 31), blocks (seven to six) and aces (nine to four). Errors were 19 for Canada and 18 for Serbia. Match highlights: https://youtu.be/TZ6JUPp2F2o

Canada is in Pool C, which along with Serbia and USA, includes Bulgaria, Germany and Kazakhstan.

This pool moves to Lodz, Poland, after today’s matches are concluded.

Monday’s match is 9 pm local time; 3 pm ET.

The 19th edition of the Women’s World Championship takes place in the Netherlands and Poland. Matches will be played across three Dutch and three Polish cities between September 23 and October 15.

Les Canadiennes entament leur parcours au Championnat du monde

26 septembre 2022 – Le Canada a entrepris son parcours au Championnat du monde féminin de la FIVB 2022 avec un revers en trois manches (25-23, 25-16 et 25-20) aux mains de la Serbie et affrontera les États-Unis, qui occupent le premier rang mondial, lundi soir à Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas.

« C’est un bon départ et il y a des éléments positifs sur lesquels bâtir. Les Serbes forment une équipe avec laquelle il est difficile de rivaliser dans un premier match au Championnat du monde, mais je crois que nous avons bien fait face à la pression. Nous avons réalisé des remontées, mais des erreurs inopportunes nous ont coûté cher », a déclaré l’entraîneure-chef Shannon Winzer.

« Nous avons un autre match difficile contre les Américaines qui sont championnes olympiques en titre. Un premier match est toujours marqué par la nervosité alors c’est bon d’écarter cet élément. Je crois que notre équipe sera plus détendue pour la suite du tournoi et nous allons offrir une belle bataille aux États-Unis. »

Dimanche, la capitaine Tijana Boskovic de la Serbie a inscrit 23 points, en vertu de 18 attaques marquantes et cinq as au service, un sommet dans le match. Les Serbes ont dominé les Canadiennes au chapitre des attaques marquantes (40-31), des contres (7-6) et des as au service (9-4). Les Canadiennes ont toutefois commis 19 erreurs contre 18 pour la Serbie.

Le Canada joue au sein du Groupe C avec la Serbie et les États-Unis, ainsi que la Bulgarie, l’Allemagne et le Kazakhstan. Le groupe déplacera ses activités du côté de Lodz, en Pologne après les matchs d’aujourd’hui.

Le match de lundi sera disputé à 21 h (heure locale) / 16 h (HE).

La 19e édition du Championnat du monde féminin de la FIVB se déroule aux Pays-Bas et en Pologne. Les matchs seront disputés dans trois villes néerlandaises et trois villes polonaises, du 23 septembre au 15 octobre.
