TORONTO 2017 NAIG – Team Saskatchewan dominates first day of athletics
 
Toronto, ON – July 19, 2017 – The athletics competition got under way on Wednesday at the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games and Team Saskatchewan took full advantage, rocketing to the top of the overall medal standings thanks to a whopping 25 medals at York Lions Stadium.
 
Saskatchewan athletes won 13 of 30 finals contested on the opening day of track and field, to go with six runner-up finishes and six third positions. Team Ontario also had a productive day at the 2015 Pan Am Games venue, with 18 podiums (6-7-5).

Eleven other sports were also in action on Wednesday, as volleyball also made its Toronto 2017 NAIG debut.
 
On the cultural side, it was another exciting night at the York University and McMaster University Cultural Festivals. Tonight’s performances featured award-winning Indigenous artists Mimi O’Bonsawin, Cris Derksen, Shibastik and Kathia Rock.
 
The Toronto 2017 NAIG continues until Saturday and wraps-up in the evening with the closing ceremony on the York campus.
