2017 Canada Summer Games – (Sagkeeng First Nation, MB) July 14, 2017 – Sagkeeng Anicinabe/Great Falls welcomed the spirit of the Canada Games today as the Canada Games’ Roly McLenahan torch travelled to the Indigenous community located on Treaty 1 land, about 120 km northeast of Winnipeg.

Games mascot Niibin was on hand to cheer on twenty one individuals who were chosen by a local selection committee to carry the torch down Highway 11 through Sagkeeng First Nation and Pine Falls-Powerview along the Winnipeg River to the bridge on Provincial Rd 304 then back to where it began, at the Sagkeeng Arena Complex.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay carries the excitement of the Games throughout Manitoba. The torch was lit in Ottawa on June 6, 2017 for the official lighting ceremony. On June 21, Indigenous Elders and Grandmothers infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, while honouring the land and waters the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held upon.  Between June 23 and July 26, the Roly McLenahan Torch will travel to 10 communities around the province, as well as to Kenora, Ontario.
