Swim Nova Scotia – Winnipeg, MB– Four Nova Scotia swimmers wrapped up competition today at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, MB with the Open Water event.

Nicholas Bourbonniere and Hayden Bartoch were Nova Scotia’s top swimmers on the male side with a twelfth and ninth place finish in times of 1:03:02.73 and 1:01:28.92 respectively. Madison Archer and Grace Earle were the top finishers for the females with a sixth and thirteenth-place finishes in times of 1:04:15.79 and 1:06:27.26 respectively.

The Open Water event was moved to the Pan Am pool late Friday afternoon due to a lake closure at Bird Hill Park. Swimmers completed their 5km open water swim as a straight pool swim.

The swim team wrapped up the competition with an eighth-place finish overall. Special Olympian Andrew Lowe brought home one bronze medal for the team and Benjamin Mingo set three new Nova Scotia 13-14 Provincial Records in the Backstroke events throughout the competition.  Overall, the team achieved many personal best times and some swimmers achieved National qualification standards.  Lead Coach, Lance Cansdale was very pleased with the team. “I feel that the learning opportunities and posting of positive results in a very competitively challenging environment will serve these young swimmers down the road.  At the very least each swimmer on our squad should feel that they belong at this level of competition and can race with the best young talent in the rest of the country.”

Twenty-six swimmers from across Nova Scotia were selected to represent Team Nova Scotia at the 2017 Canada Summer Games this week in Winnipeg, MB.  The team was comprised of 24 able bodied swimmers (12 male and 12 female), one PARA swimmer and one Canadian Special Olympian.
