Kingston, August 8, 2022 – Sail Canada announced today that Norman Struthers and Forrest Wachholz have been respectively named recipients of the 2020 and 2021 Nathan R Cowan Memorial Awards.

Created in 2002, the Nathan R Cowan Memorial Award aims to support developing sailors through financial support, a way to honour the memory of Nathan Cowan who, after years of determination and persistence, achieved his goal of becoming a Canadian Sailing Team member. However, a few months later, Nathan Cowan passed away tragically in a car accident.

The 21-year-old sailor in ILCA 7 from Toronto was the top Canadian at the 2020 Senior European Championships in Poland with a 85th-place finish, and was 9th out of a total of 51 sailors at the UK National Championships. He is also a Youth National Champion, having won the 2017 Sail Canada Youth Championships in ILCA 7, and he was ranked 7th as well as Top Junior among 44 sailors at the 2019 Junior North American Championships. Having completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Biomedical Science at the University of Southampton in the UK, he is now based in Malta.

“I am really proud to receive the 2020 Nathan R Cowan Memorial Award for developing sailors,” said Norman Struthers. “The award is given in memory of Nathan and is important as it helps support Canadian athletes who are not on the national team and do not receive national funding.”

“I’d like to thank the Cowan family, Sail Canada, my coach Alexander Denisiuc, the Sail Coach Foundation, the RCYC Athlete Development Fund, the University of Southampton, Rooster Sailing as well as my individual sponsors. Finally, a big thank you to my parents, without whom I would not be able to do what I do. The financial support from this award will go directly towards my participation in the 2022 European Championships in France this November. Thank you!”

Forrest Wachholz: winner of the 2021 Nathan R Cowan Memorial Award

In 2021, the 25-year-old sailor in ILCA 7 from Innisfil, ON, finished 1st at the Fall CORK, 2nd at the CORK OCR and 3rd at the Sail Canada ILCA 7 Canadian Championships. In 2019, he also took the 9th spot at the OCR in Fort Lauderdale, and finished 6th at the 2022 US Sailing Open Series. In April of 2021, he was medically cleared to train after being forced to stay inactive for six months due to myocarditis and, since then, he has been working out to return as effectively as possible.

“I am honoured to receive the Nathan R Cowan Memorial Award,” said Forrest Wachholz. “The support it contributes is incredibly helpful and will allow me to continue campaigning hard towards Paris 2024. I look forward to continuing Nathan’s Legacy!”

Decennial Fundraiser

In order to be able to pursue the mission of this award and continue to financially support athletes for another decade, the foundation is organizing a fundraising event on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at the RCYC starting at 6pm. The event will feature a live show with Tommy Youngsteen, North America’s premier Bruce Springsteen tribute band including members and alumni from The Sam Roberts Band and The Arkells, among others. They will be followed by DJ Jed Harper.

“All sailors know how expensive this sport can be, especially when your goal is to represent your country in major international competition like the Olympic Games,” said cofounder of the Nathan R. Cowan Memorial Award and 2004 Olympian in Sailing Bernard Luttmer. “Please come and support the next generation of Canadian sailors by having fun and taking advantage of the RCYC’s great location on a summer night this Sept. 3.”

About the Nathan R. Cowan Memorial Award

The Nathan R. Cowan Memorial Award is given annually to a Canadian sailor who is 19 years of age or older as of December 31 in the year of the nomination and who is not a member of the Canadian Sailing Team or a carded athlete during the year of the award. The winner will have shown a record of outstanding achievement in national and international competitions, have followed a committed training program during the year of the award, brought recognition to Canadian competitive sailing, have demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship, and have made efforts in fundraising through sponsorship and private contributions.

Since 2002, the Nathan R Cowan Memorial Award has annually supported one athlete or one team, including Olympians David Wright, Stéphane Locas and Oliver Bone, Lee Parkhill, Tom Ramshaw, Jacob and Graeme Saunders, Will Jones and Evan DePaul, as well as current Sail Canada Development Squad members James Juhasz, Fillah Karim and Clara Gravely.

Kingston, le 8 août 2022 – Voile Canada a annoncé aujourd’hui que Norman Struthers et Forrest Wachholz ont été sélectionnés à titre de récipiendaires des Prix commémoratifs Nathan R. Cowan pour respectivement 2020 et 2021.

Créé en 2022, le Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan vise à supporter les athlètes en développement par un support financier, une façon d’honorer la mémoire de Nathan Cowan qui, après plusieurs années de détermination et de persévérance, avait réalisé son objectif de devenir membre de l’équipe canadienne de voile. Toutefois, quelques mois plus tard, Nathan Cowan est décédé tragiquement à la suite d’un accident de voiture.

L’athlète de 21 ans en ILCA 7 de Toronto a été le meilleur canadien aux Championnats européens de 2020 en Pologne avec une 85e position, et a terminé au 9e rang sur 51 athlètes aux Championnats nationaux du Royaume-Uni. Il a également été couronné champion national de la jeunesse, lui qui a remporté les Championnats de la jeunesse en ILCA 7 de Voile Canada en 2017. Il s’est également classé au 7e rang pour être le meilleur athlète junior parmi 44 compétiteurs aux Championnats nord-américains juniors de 2019. Il a complété son baccalauréat en génie mécanique et en sciences biomédicales à l’Université de Southampton au Royaume-Uni, et il réside présentement à Malte.

« Je suis très fier de recevoir le Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan 2020 pour les athlètes en développement », a déclaré Norman Struthers. « Ce prix est remis en mémoire de Nathan et est important alors qu’il contribue à supporter les athlètes canadiens qui ne sont pas membres de l’équipe canadienne et qui ne reçoivent pas un soutien financier national. »

« J’aimerais remercier la famille Cowan, Voile Canada, mon entraîneur Alexander Denisiuc, la Fondation Sail Coach, le Fonds de développement des athlètes de RCYC, l’Université de Southampton, Rooster Sailing ainsi que mes commanditaires personnels. Finalement, j’aimerais dire un gros merci à mes parents, sans qui je ne pourrais faire ce que je fais. Le support financier lié à ce prix ira directement à ma participation aux Championnats européens 2022 en France au mois de novembre. Merci! »

Forrest Wachholz : gagnant du Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan en 2021

En 2021, l’athlète de 25 ans en ILCA 7 d’Innisfil, en Ontario, a terminé au premier rang à Fall CORK, 2e à CORK OCR, et 3e aux Championnats canadiens en ILCA 7 de Voile canada. En 2019, il a également pris le 9e rang à OCR à Fort Lauderdale, et a terminé au 6e rang au US Sailing Open Series de 2022. En avril 2021, il a obtenu le feu vert des médecins pour s’entraîneur après avoir été forcé à l’inaction pendant six mois en raison d’une myocardite. Depuis ce temps, il s’entraîne pour revenir le plus rapidement possible au sommet de sa forme.

« Je suis honoré de recevoir le Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan », a dit Forrest Waccholz. « Le support relié à ce prix est d’une incroyable aide et me permettra de continuer mon parcours vers Paris 2024. Je suis heureux de poursuivre l’héritage de Nathan! »

Levée de fonds de la décennie

Afin de poursuivre la mission de ce prix et de continuer à supporter financièrement les athlètes pour une autre décennie, la fondation organise une levée de fonds le samedi 3 septembre 2022 au RCYC à compter de 18 h. Cette soirée présentera un spectacle de Tommy Youngsteen, le premier spectacle rendant hommage à Bruce Springsteen en Amérique du Nord incluant entre autres des membres actuels et anciens des groupes The Sam Roberts Band et The Arkells. Ils seront suivis de DJ Jed Harper.

“Tous les amateurs de voile savent à quel point ce sport peut être dispendieux, spécialement lorsque votre but est de représenter votre pays dans des compétitions internationales majeures comme les Jeux olympiques », a déclaré le cofondateur du Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan et Olympien de 2004 en voile, Bernard Luttmer. « Nous vous invitons à venir et à supporter la prochaine génération de navigateurs canadiens tout en ayant du plaisir et en profitant de l’opportunité de venir sur les magnifiques installations du RCYC lors d’une soirée d’été ce 3 septembre. »

Le Prix commémoratif Nathan R. Cowan est remis annuellement à un athlète canadien âgé de 19 ans et plus au 31 décembre au cours de l’année de nomination et qui n’est pas membre de l’équipe canadienne de voile ou un athlète breveté lors de l’année de la remise du prix. Le gagnant aura récolté des accomplissements remarquables dans des compétitions nationales et internationales, suivi rigoureusement un plan d’entraînement durant l’année de reconnaissance, a stimulé la reconnaissance de la voile canadienne de compétition, a démontré du leadership et de l’esprit sportif, et a démontré un effort en faisant des levées de fonds auprès de commanditaires ou de donateurs privés.
