Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games – Day 2 Women’s Softball Recap

Day 2 of the Women’s Softball competition took place at Southward Park on Monday with all games completed following a pair of rain delays.

Manitoba 10 vs. Nova Scotia 0

Manitoba started the day by picking up their first win of the tournament in five innings. The bats got going right out of the gate with a pair of singles to start the game later followed by a sacrifice fly to center and a run-scoring double by Emily Doyle to take a quick 2-0 lead. Team Toba added a run on an error in the second, then got a pair of RBI singles by Abbi Conrad and Janique Balcaen to build out a 5-0 lead. Olivia Goderis and Brooklyn Franklin each added run-scoring singles in the top of the fifth, then Conrad tripled to right to bring in two more runs and scored on a single by Balcaen to round out the scoring. Alexa Guilford earned the shutout in the pitcher’s circle, allowing only three hits and striking out two. Renae Boutilier, Jayden Palmer and Kaiti Ellsworth each singled for Nova Scotia, while Temma Parsons took the pitching loss.

Saskatchewan 7 vs. Prince Edward Island 0

Saskatchewan improved its record to 2-0 with a win in six innings that was much closer than the score indicated. Team PEI loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but was not able to score, while Saskatchewan was also to open the scoring in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Olivia Woytiuk. In the fourth, Saskatchewan put two runners on base before Raivyn Williams laced a two-run single to right followed by a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0. Saskatchewan put the game away in the sixth by loading the bases then scoring three runs on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Erin Kirkland picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle, while Andrea Caron took the loss. Zoe Stewart, Ashley Cullen and Gracie Hackett each had a single for PEI.

Alberta 5 vs. New Brunswick 1

Team Alberta got on the board first with a run-scoring single by Emily Watters in the top of the second, but New Brunswick answered immediately with an RBI single of their own off the bat of Gracelyn Walsh to tie the game. Alberta added two runs on singles by Paige Simpson and Gracie Hodgson in the third before the skies opened forcing a rain delay. Once play resumed, Avery Terpsma tripled to right and score on an error, then Alberta added another insurance run with an RBI single by Rayna Cruickshank on the sixth to complete the scoring. Cruickshank also earned the complete game win in the circle as Alberta improved its first-place record in Pool B to 3-0.

Ontario 19 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 0

Ontario had its second offensive outburst in as many days in a high-scoring win over Newfoundland & Labrador. After loading the bases on three walks in the top of the first, Michaela Tuck hit a two-run single followed by a single by Kait Achtermaier for the early 3-0 lead. In the second, Katina Duscio tripled and scored on a double by Deanna Grahek, later followed with a bases loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and the tournament’s first homerun, a three-run blast deep to left by Amy Hughes. Team Ontario then piled on with 10 runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by an RBI double by Katie Lorenz and a three-run blast by Grahek. Shilo Chislett and Hannah Healey each singled for Newfoundland & Labrador, while Ontario produced 20 hits including three each by Kaitlyn Kim, Tuck, Achtermaier and Hughes. Rayven Buchanan got the win in the pitcher’s circle.

British Columbia 11 vs. Nova Scotia 1

Team BC scored in every inning to keep their undefeated record and their first-place spot in Pool A intact. The bats wasted no time building an early lead with four consecutive singles, with one by Camryn Milley driving in two runs and another two-run single coming off the bat of Kennedy Laird later in the inning. BC added a run on an error in the second, with Nova Scotia getting on the board on an error in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-1. Team BC got another run-scoring single by Laird in the third later followed by a two-run single by Ellie Vance and Madelyn McKinnon drove in the ninth run with a double. Shae Sever doubled in a run and later scored on a sacrifice fly to put the run rule into effect before Kierra Fournier closed out the game. Nevada Johnson earned the win while Lauren Arnold had Nova Scotia’s only hit but was saddled with the pitching loss for Nova Scotia.

Manitoba 3 vs. Saskatchewan 0

Manitoba blanked Saskatchewan behind a fantastic pitching performance by Hope Ransome who limited Saskatchewan to only two hits. Her offence spotted her an early lead on a run-scoring single by Danika Nell in the bottom of the first, then added an insurance run on another RBI single by Nell in the third before adding their third run on a passed ball in the fourth. That was all the run support Ransome needed as her defence held strong behind her. Saskatchewan got a double by Jorde Chartrand in the top of the first and a single by Makena Simmons in the fifth, with the pitching loss going to Chartrand.

Quebec 8 vs. Ontario 3

In a wildly entertaining game, Quebec and Ontario played nearly an inning before a torrential downpour and strong winds put the game into a weather delay. The game resumed after an hour and twenty-minute delay, with Quebec scoring immediately after Naomi Pelletier hit a two-out double to center and later scored on a wild pitch. Ontario responded immediately by loading the bases with no outs and pushing three runs across on a single by Laura Winters and a two-run single by Kaitlyn Kim for the 3-1 lead. The pitching took over from there as neither team scored on the third and fourth innings until Quebec pushed two runs in to score in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back run-scoring singles by Emily Meloche and Lea Chevrier to tie the game. The following inning, Quebec got a pair of walks and the runners moved up on a passed ball before a pair of suicide squeeze plays to bring two runs in to score, followed by three consecutive singles by Pelletier, Meloche and Chevrier to plate three more runs. Ontario loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to draw closer, as Chevrier picked up the complete game win for Quebec.

Day 3 will be the last day of round robin play with Alberta (3-0) and British Columbia (3-0) each leading their pool. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are currently tied for second place in Pool A at 2-1, whole Ontario sits second in Pool B also with a 2-1 record followed closely by Quebec at 1-1 with two games remaining on Tuesday. Key matchups on Day 3 include British Columbia against Saskatchewan at noon EDT and Ontario battling Alberta at 4:15pm EDT.

Le jour 2 de la compétition de softball féminin a eu lieu au parc Southward lundi avec tous les matchs terminés après deux délais de pluie.

Manitoba 10 c. Nouvelle-Écosse 0

Le Manitoba a commencé la journée en remportant sa première victoire du tournoi en cinq manches. Les bâtons se sont mis en marche dès le départ avec une paire de simples pour commencer le match, suivi plus tard d’un ballon sacrifice au centre et d’un double d’Emily Doyle pour prendre une avance rapide de 2 à 0. Le Manitoba a ajouté un point sur une erreur en deuxième manche, puis a obtenu une paire de simples d’un point par Abbi Conrad et Janique Balcaen pour créer une avance de 5 à 0. Olivia Goderis et Brooklyn Franklin ont chacune ajouté des simples d’un point en début de cinquième, puis Conrad a triplé à droite pour apporter deux autres points au marbre et a marqué sur un simple de Balcaen pour compléter le pointage. Alexa Guilford a obtenu le jeu blanc dans le cercle des lanceuses, n’accordant que trois coups sûrs et retirant deux frappeuses sur des prises. Saskatchewan 7 c. Île-du-Prince-Édouard 0

La Saskatchewan a amélioré sa fiche à 2-0 avec une victoire en six manches qui était plus serrée que le pointage l’indique. Après avoir rempli les coussins sur trois buts sur balles en début de première, Michaela Tuck a frappé un simple de deux points suivis d’un simple de Kait Achtermaier pour prendre les devants 3 à 0. En deuxième, Katina Duscio a triplé et a marqué sur un double de Deanna Grahek, suivi plus tard d’un but sur balles avec les buts pleins, d’un ballon sacrifice et du premier coup de circuit du tournoi, un coup de trois points au champ gauche par Amy Hughes. La Colombie-Britannique a marqué à chaque manche pour conserver sa fiche invaincue et la première position dans le groupe A. Les bâtons n’ont pas perdu de temps pour se créer une avance rapide avec quatre simples consécutifs, dont un de Camryn Milley de deux points et un autre simple de deux points du bâton de Kennedy Laird plus tard dans la manche. La C.-B. a ajouté un point sur une erreur en deuxième, et la Nouvelle-Écosse s’est inscrit au tableau de pointage sur une erreur en fin de manche pour porter la marque à 5 à 1. L’équipe de la Colombie-Britannique a obtenu un autre simple de Laird en troisième, plus tard suivi d’un simple de deux points d’Ellie Vance et Madelyn McKinnon a produit un double pour marque le neuvième point. Le Manitoba a blanchi la Saskatchewan grâce à une fantastique performance de la lanceuse Hope Ransome qui a limité la Saskatchewan à seulement deux coups sûrs. Son attaque lui a donné une avance tôt sur un simple de Danika Nell en fin de première, puis a ajouté un point d’assurance sur un autre simple d’un point de Nell en troisième avant d’ajouter leur troisième point sur une balle passée en quatrième. C’était tout le soutien dont Ransome avait besoin alors que sa défensive a tenu fort derrière elle. La Saskatchewan a obtenu un double de Jorde Chartrand en début de première et un simple de Makena Simmons en cinquième, alors que la défaite est allée à Chartrand.

Québec 8 c. Ontario 3

Dans un match extrêmement divertissant, le Québec et l’Ontario ont joué près d’une manche avant qu’une averse de pluie torrentielle et des vents violents ont mis le match en pause. Le match s’est continué après une heure et vingt minute, et le Québec a marqué immédiatement après que Naomi Pelletier a frappé un double avec deux retraits au centre et a ensuite marqué sur un mauvais lancer. L’Ontario a répondu immédiatement en remplissant les coussins sans retraits et poussant trois points sur un simple de Laura Winters et un simple de deux points de Kaitlyn Kim pour l’avance 3 à 1. Les lanceuses ont pris contrôle à partir de là, alors qu’aucune équipe n’a marqué lors des troisième et quatrième manches jusqu’à ce que le Québec pousse deux points pour marquer en fin de cinquième sur des simples consécutifs d’Emily Meloche et Léa Chevrier pour égaliser la marque. La manche suivante, le Québec a obtenu une paire de buts sur balles et les coureuses ont avancées sur une balle passée avant une paire d’amortis suicides ont marquer deux points, suivi de trois simples consécutifs par Pelletier, Meloche et Chevrier pour marquer trois autres points. L’Ontario a rempli les buts en fin de septième mais n’a pas pu se rapprocher, alors que Chevrier a remporté la victoire par match complet pour le Québec.

Le jour 3 sera le dernier jour de la ronde préliminaire avec l’Alberta (3-0) et la Colombie-Britannique (3-0) menant chacune leur groupe. Le Manitoba et la Saskatchewan sont actuellement en égalité au deuxième rang du groupe A à 2-1, alors que l’Ontario occupe présentement la deuxième place du groupe B avec un dossier de 2-1 suivi de près par le Québec à 1-1 avec deux matchs à jouer mardi. Les affrontements clés du jour 3 incluent la Colombie-Britannique contre la Saskatchewan à midi HAE et l’Ontario contre l’Alberta à 16h15 HAE.
