Hockey Canada Unveils Roster For 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship
23 players set to wear the Maple Leaf in Wisconsin in June
CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada has announced the 23 players who will represent Canada at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, scheduled for June 6-13 in Madison and Middleton, Wisconsin.
All 23 players named to the roster, consisting of three goaltenders, seven defence and 13 forwards, will be making their international debuts with Team Canada.
The roster was selected by head coach Howie Draper (Edmonton, Alta./University of Alberta, CW), assistant coaches Vicky Sunohara (Scarborough, Ont./University of Toronto, OUA) and Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont./Stonehill College, NEWHA), and goaltending coach Gord Woodhall (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg, MFHL), with support from Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.), director of hockey operations with Hockey Canada, and Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.), senior manager of scouting and player development with Canada’s National Women’s Program; Hockey Canada’s regional scouts also provided input.
“Our staff has done an amazing job evaluating talent at the under-18 level through our selection camp and with their club teams throughout the season,” said Kingsbury. “This is an exciting time for this group of dedicated athletes, who have patiently waited for a chance to compete on the international stage. Our athletes and coaching staff are eager to travel to Wisconsin and represent Canada while having the opportunity to compete for gold at the world championship.”
Canada is in Group A at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship with Finland, Sweden and the United States. Group B is comprised of Czechia, Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland. It opens the tournament against Finland on June 6 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT. Canada will also face Sweden on June 7 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT before its preliminary-round finale against the United States on June 9 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will broadcast 12 and nine games, respectively, from LaBahn Arena, including the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal games; check local listings for details.
Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team will look to earn its first gold medal at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship since 2019; it has won five gold medals (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019), seven silver (2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020) and one bronze (2018).
