Elimination rounds begin at World Archery 3D Championships

TERNI, IT – Following a day of rest on Wednesday, some Canadian archers are back on the archery range for the elimination rounds. The day started off with the traditional and longbow competitors. 

The first two archers on the docket today were Miranda Sparkes and Marc Britton. Sparkes, a longbow archer, competed against Irena Mavric Plesko of Slovenia in her first match, unfortunately dropping it with a score of 28-23. Britton shoots with a traditional bow, and he was up against Norwegian Ola Klaapbakken, who won the match with a score of 56-45. Neither Canadian will advance in the event.

After the delay, Trudy Dryden was able to take the field in the traditional bow competition. She was up against Daniela Marsetti (ITA) in her first match, and she came out on top with a score of 61-44. Moving on to face 4th-ranked Jarmila Korabecna from the Czech Republic, she was able to win again with a score of 50-44. As the winner of pool C, she was then slated to face off against Austrian Irene Nöbauer. Unfortunately, she was not able to secure the win and advance, losing with a score of 51-57. 

“The day started early with 5:30 breakfast and the bus picked us up at 6:30,” Rene Schaub described. “After our 1 hour bus ride, we arrived in time for 8:00 practice for longbow and traditional archers. As the individual matches got going, the weather started to turn to light and then heavier rain. Unfortunately, Miranda and Mark had started their matches. The rain soaked them head to toe and made it very hard to shoot. By the end of the match, they both lost. By the time the round was over, the lightning had moved in close. The matches were then canceled for almost an hour. Trudy did very well, but finally lost in the quarterfinals.”

Following the midday break for lunch, the compound and barebow archers were able to take their shot at winning some elimination rounds. 

Jovica Djukic then shot an incredibly close first elimination round against Matteo Seghetta, who was shooting in his home country of Italy. Djukic was close but unable to pull out the win with a score of 45-47.  

Three Canadian compound women shot in the first round. April Willis was shooting against Lea Jarrett (USA) in the opening elimination, and unfortunately was not able to pull the win (44-59). Andrea Wiens was also unable to advance past her first opponent Alba María Guerrero Sanchez from Spain, who won the match 60-55. Monica Higgins won her first match against Brenda Gonzalez (MEX) with a score of 61-55. She was then able to win the next match in a close score of 60-58, against Heli Raunio of Finland. Her subsequent match against American Gracelyn Chambers was also a success; the archers were tied for many of the ends, with Higgins being able to pull away in the final end, not shooting an arrow under 10. Higgins then continued her winning streak against Kirstine Godskesen Klausen of Denmark, who was ranked 5th after qualifications. The Canadian compound archer came away with a decisive score of 58-51, which named her the winner of Pool B. While Higgins was supposed to go on and shoot in the quarterfinal match against the Pool C winner, the weather did not produce safe shooting conditions so the match was postponed until Friday, September 9. 

William “Alex” Melnik, the third-ranked barebow archer in the competition, was able to pull out a win in his first match against Fredrik Lundmark from Sweden, taking the match with a score of 63-61. This made him the winner of Pool A and moved on to face the winner of Pool D, Spaniard Cesar Vera Bringas. In a match that resulted in a tiebreaker, Melnik and Vera Bringas both shot 8s, but the Canadian’s was closer to the middle, meaning he moved on to shoot in the semifinals against Italian Giuseppe Seimandi on Saturday, September 10. 

“Most of our compound shooters lost, except for Monica, who kept winning match after match,” continues Schaub. “Alex, who had come in 3rd position in the qualifiers, shot his match and won against a world champion. He then shot to get in the semi finals and after 6 targets were tied. After they shot a tiebreaker, Alex won by 2 cm. He will be shooting the finals on Saturday for medals. Monica started to shoot her quarterfinals and after one target it started raining so hard they had to call it off. The head judge said in 22 years he had never called a match because of rain. The match will be continued tomorrow after the team finals.”

The team finals and the remaining quarter finals will take place tomorrow on Friday, September 9. The competition will then turn to the individual semifinals and medal matches on Saturday, September 10.

Les rondes éliminatoires commencent aux Championnats du monde de tir à l’arc 3D

TERNI, IT – Après une journée de repos mercredi, certains archers canadiens sont de retour sur le champ de tir à l’arc pour les rondes éliminatoires. La météo a été un peu capricieuse, la compétition a été suspendue pendant près d’une heure en raison des conditions météorologiques, puis certains matchs ont été reportés au vendredi 9 septembre. La journée a commencé avec les compétiteurs de l’arc traditionnel et de l’arc long. 

Les deux premiers archers en lice aujourd’hui étaient Miranda Sparkes et Marc Britton. Sparkes, une archère à l’arc long, a affronté la Slovène Irena Mavric Plesko dans son premier match, qu’elle a malheureusement perdu sur le score de 28-23. Britton, qui tire à l’arc traditionnel, était opposé au Norvégien Ola Klaapbakken, qui a remporté le match avec un score de 56-45. Aucun des deux Canadiens n’avancera dans l’épreuve.

Après un retard de 50 minutes dû à la météo, Trudy Dryden a pu entrer sur le terrain dans la compétition de l’arc traditionnel. Elle a affronté Daniela Marsetti (ITA) dans son premier match, et elle s’est imposée avec un score de 61-44. Elle a ensuite affronté Jarmila Korabecna (République tchèque), classée 4e, et s’est à nouveau imposée sur le score de 50 à 44. En tant que gagnante de la poule C, elle devait ensuite affronter l’Autrichienne Irene Nöbauer. Malheureusement, elle n’a pas été en mesure d’obtenir la victoire et d’avancer, perdant sur le score de 51-57.

« La journée a commencé tôt avec un petit-déjeuner à 5h30 et le bus est venu nous chercher à 6h30, » a décrit Rene Schaub. « Après notre trajet d’une heure en bus, nous sommes arrivés à temps pour 8h00 d’entraînement pour les archers d’arc long et traditionnel. Alors que les matchs individuels commençaient, le temps a commencé à se transformer en une pluie légère, puis plus forte. Malheureusement, Miranda et Mark avaient commencé leurs matchs. La pluie les a trempés de la tête aux pieds et a rendu le tir très difficile. À la fin du match, ils ont tous deux perdu. À la fin du match, la foudre s’était rapprochée. Les matchs ont alors été annulés pendant près d’une heure. Trudy s’est très bien débrouillée, mais a finalement perdu en quart de finale. »

Après la pause de midi pour le déjeuner, les archers d’arc à poulies et arc nu ont pu tenter de remporter quelques rondes éliminatoires. 

Jovica Djukic a tiré une première ronde éliminatoire incroyablement serrée contre Matteo Seghetta, qui tirait dans son pays d’origine, l’Italie. Djukic était proche de la victoire mais n’a pas pu la remporter sur un score de 45-47.

Trois femmes canadiennes ont tiré dans le premier tour. April Willis a tiré contre Lea Jarrett (É.-U.) dans la première ronde éliminatoire, et n’a malheureusement pas pu arracher la victoire (44-59). Andrea Wiens n’a pas pu non plus passer devant sa première adversaire, Alba María Guerrero Sanchez d’Espagne, qui a remporté le match 60-55. Monica Higgins a remporté son premier match contre Brenda Gonzalez (MEX) sur le score de 61-55. Elle a ensuite remporté son match suivant sur un score serré de 60-58, contre Heli Raunio (Finlande). Son match suivant contre l’Américaine Gracelyn Chambers a également été un succès ; les archères ont été à égalité pendant de nombreuses manches, mais Higgins a pu se détacher dans la dernière manche, ne tirant pas une flèche en dessous de 10. Higgins a ensuite poursuivi sa série de victoires contre Kirstine Godskesen Klausen du Danemark, qui était classée 5e après les qualifications. L’archère canadienne d’arc à poulies s’en est sortie avec un score décisif de 58-51, ce qui lui a valu de remporter la poule B. Higgins était censée continuer et tirer en quart de finale contre le vainqueur de la poule C, mais la météo n’a pas permis de tirer dans de bonnes conditions et le match a été reporté au vendredi 9 septembre. 

William “Alex” Melnik, le troisième archer d’arc nu de la compétition, a réussi à remporter son premier match contre le Suédois Fredrik Lundmark, sur le score de 63-61. Il est ainsi devenu le vainqueur de la poule A et a pu affronter le vainqueur de la poule D, l’Espagnol Cesar Vera Bringas. Dans un match qui s’est soldé par un bris d’égalité, Melnik et Vera Bringas ont tous deux tiré des 8, mais celui du Canadien était plus proche du milieu, ce qui signifie qu’il est passé en demi-finale contre l’Italien Giuseppe Seimandi le samedi 10 septembre.

« La plupart de nos tireurs à poulies ont perdu, sauf Monica, qui a continué à gagner match après match, » continue Schaub. « Alex, qui était arrivé en troisième position lors des qualifications, a tiré son match et a gagné contre un champion du monde. Il a ensuite tiré pour se qualifier pour les demi-finales et après 6 cibles, ils étaient à égalité. Après avoir tiré un bris d’égalité, Alex a gagné par 2 cm. Il participera aux finales de samedi pour les médailles. Monica a commencé à tirer son quart de finale et après une cible, il a commencé à pleuvoir si fort qu’ils ont dû l’annuler. Le juge principal a déclaré qu’en 22 ans, il n’avait jamais annulé un match à cause de la pluie. Le match se poursuivra demain après les finales par équipe. 

Les finales par équipes et les autres quarts de finale auront lieu demain, vendredi 9 septembre. La compétition se poursuivra ensuite par les demi-finales individuelles et les matchs pour les médailles le samedi 10 septembre.
