Dana Cooke and Colleen Loach Finish Strong at Land Rover Three-Day Event

Lexington, KY, May 2, 2022 – Canada’s Dana Cooke and Colleen Loach posted top ten finishes at the 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by MARS Equestrian. Held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY from April 28 – May 1, 2022, the famous event is a favourite for some of the world’s elite eventers and fans of the sport.

After its cancellation in 2020 and having no spectators in 2021, a reported 80,000 equestrian enthusiasts flocked to the grounds to catch some of the adrenaline-filled tests from this past Thursday to Sunday.

Excited fans watched Cooke finish in the top five, riding FE Mississippi (Cassini II x Leggat), a grey 12-year-old Württemberger mare owned by FE Mississippi Syndicate Inc., in the CCI4*-S division. A total of 46 entries contested the four-star division, with 29 completing the three-phase event including the cross-country course designed by Derek di Grazia.

“It has been a great week here at Kentucky!” Cooke said about her first-time riding in the event. “We put in a consistent dressage test, and I was pretty happy with her,” Cooke said about the beloved mare, whose nickname is ‘Miss Perfect.’ “She has always been a very sweet, polite mare. She always tries hard and to be so good.”

Cooke, originally from Merritt, BC, now residing in Mooresville, NC, started in 24th after recording 32.9 penalty points in the opening dressage phase. The duo made a drastic change in the standings during the cross-country phase, moving up to fifth place, after incurring 7.6 time-faults.

“The cross-country proved to be quite influential!” she said referring to her big move up the leaderboard. “The brush and the skinny at 4ab and the coffin at 6abc were I think the toughest questions. Missi just got better and more confident as she went around. She looked for the flags and it really flowed.” The 35-year-old and her lovely German-bred mare held on to fifth position after just 4 penalty points in the jumping test and rounded out the top five with a score of 44.5.

Fellow Canadian Loach of Dunham, QC, finished right behind Cooke in sixth place, riding FE Golden Eye (Goldfever 3 x Contendro I), a nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding she co-owns with Maureen Lemay, Amanda Bernhard and Peter Barry. The pair started the three-phase event in 18th place after posting a 68.37% and scoring 31.7 penalty points in the dressage test. The two-time Olympian and FE Golden Eye moved up the rankings after completing the cross country with a time penalty of 12.8 to move into eighth place. In the final phase, they jumped clear to finish with a score of 44.5 in sixth.

The two-time Olympian competing in her third trip as a rider to the competition said, “Kentucky is always an amazing event to be a part of and I feel lucky every year I am able to compete here.” She said, “the course was very challenging, the coffin at 6 and 4ab was tough but the water jumps were the most fun.” The 39-year-old added, “Goldie is pretty good in all three phases but show jumping is his strongest phase.” The pair is set to compete in Tryon, North Carolina in two weeks.

Other notable Canadian performances in the CCI4*-S include Holly Jacks-Smither of Hillsburgh, ON, and Candy King, who finished 15th overall and Lindsay Traisnel of Maidstone, ON, and Bacyrouge, who placed 23rd in the standings.

In the challenging CCI5*-L event, Lisa Marie Fergusson of Langley, BC, and her own Honor Me, a 16-year-old Welsh Sport Horse gelding sired by Brynarian Bernin finished in 19th as the highest Canadian followed by Jessica Phoenix of Cannington, ON, and Bogue Sound finishing in 21st and Aldergrove, BC’s Hawley Bennett-Awad and JollyBo placed 27th.

Dana Cooke et Colleen Loach brillent au Land Rover Three-Day Event

Lexington (Kentucky), le 2 mai 2022 – Les Canadiennes Dana Cooke et Colleen Loach se sont hissées parmi les dix meilleurs au Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event 2022, un concours complet présenté par MARS Equestrian. La compétition, qui est une favorite chez plusieurs athlètes de calibre mondial et amateur(-trice)s de la discipline, était tenue au Kentucky Horse Park de Lexington (Kentucky) du 28 avril au 1er mai 2022.

L’événement avait été annulé en 2020 et n’avait pu accueillir de public en 2021. Cette année, le site a apparemment accueilli 80 000 partisans avides d’assister aux épreuves palpitantes du jeudi au dimanche.

C’est avec enthousiasme que la foule a observé Dana Cooke et FE Mississippi (Cassini II x Leggat) entrer en piste. La cavalière et la Württemberger grise de 12 ans du FE Mississippi Syndicate Inc. se sont classées parmi les cinq premiers rangs du CCI4*-S. Parmi les 46 couples présents, seuls 29 d’entre eux ont complété les trois phases de la compétition, dont le parcours de cross-country conçu par Derek di Grazia.

« Nous avons passé une superbe semaine au Kentucky », a déclaré Dana Cooke au sujet de sa première expérience à l’événement.

La cavalière a également partagé ses pensées sur sa monture adorée, qu’elle surnomme Miss Perfect : « Notre reprise de dressage était régulière et j’étais très fière d’elle. Cette jument a toujours été très douce et respectueuse. Elle fait toujours de son mieux pour donner le meilleur d’elle-même. »

Originaire de Merritt (Colombie-Britannique), Dana Cooke réside actuellement à Mooresville (Caroline du Nord). Elle a terminé la phase de dressage en 24e place avec un total de 32,9 pénalités. La phase de cross-country lui a permis de se propulser à la cinquième place, avec seulement 7,6 pénalités de temps.

« La phase de cross-country a fait toute la différence », a déclaré l’athlète au sujet de sa progression au classement. « La brosse et la pointe au 4ab et le cercueil au 6abc étaient les plus difficiles selon moi. Au fil du parcours, Missi est devenue plus performante et plus confiante; elle demeurait attentive aux drapeaux et tout s’est bien passé. » La cavalière de 35 ans et la charmante jument d’origine allemande n’ont pas dérogé du cinquième rang après la phase de saut d’obstacles, où elles ont cumulé seulement 4 pénalités. Elles se sont donc logées parmi les cinq premiers avec un résultat final de 44,5.

La Canadienne Colleen Loach (Dunham, Québec), qui a deux Jeux olympiques à son actif, s’est quant à elle classée sixième, juste derrière sa compatriote, Dana Cooke. Aux rênes de FE Golden Eye (Goldfever 3 x Contendro I), un Hanovrien de neuf ans qu’elle possède avec Maureen Lemay, Peter Barry et Amanda Bernhard, la cavalière a terminé l’épreuve de dressage en 18e place (68,37 %) avec 31,7 pénalités. Le duo s’est ensuite hissé en huitième place (12,8 pénalités de temps) en cross-country avant de livrer un sans-faute à la phase de saut d’obstacles. Le couple a ainsi obtenu la sixième place avec une note finale de 44,5.

Participer à cet événement est toujours une expérience formidable. Je me sens toujours choyée de pouvoir concourir ici », a expliqué la cavalière de 39 ans. « Le parcours était très difficile. Le cercueil au 6 et 4ab étaient ardus, mais les obstacles d’eau étaient les plus amusants. Goldie a bien fait durant les trois phases, mais il a brillé le plus durant la phase de saut d’obstacles. » Le couple compte maintenant concourir à Tryon (Caroline du Nord), dans deux semaines.

Parmi les autres performances notables du Canada au CCI4*-S, on compte notamment Holly Jacks-Smitters (Hillsburgh, Ontario) et Candy King (15e place), ainsi que Lindsay Traisnel (Maidstone, Ontario) et Bacyrouge (23e place).

Le CCI5*-L s’est quant à lui avéré exigeant. Lisa Marie Fergusson (Langley, Colombie-Britannique) et Honor Me, son Welsh Sport Horse de 16 ans (par Brynarian Bernin), se sont classés 19e. Jessica Phoenix (Cannington, Ontario) et Bogue Sound ont été le couple canadien le mieux placé du concours, avec une 21e place. Hawley Bennett-Awad (Aldergrove, Colombie-Britannique) et JollyBo se sont quant à eux logés au 27e rang.
