Bowls Canada Boulingrin – The Canadian women’s fours scooped up a bronze medal at the 2017 Multi-Nations tournament with a 10-8 victory over New Zealand.

Joanna Cooper (Calgary, AB) set the pace for the team as the lead for Canada where she battled against New Zealand’s Selina Goddard to provide Canada with solid front end bowls. Pricilla Westlake (Delta, BC) played in the second position and continued the solid front end play for Team Canada.  In the vice position, Leanne Chinery (Auckland, NZ) delivered the consistent and steady play, for which she is known, to set up skip Kelly McKerihen (Toronto ON).  McKerihen played a dynamite game with some huge draws and incredible drives.

The bronze medal capped a solid performance by the Canadian team.  As the test event for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Canada was not alone in using this opportunity to explore different team combinations and give the athletes opportunities to experience as many of the competitive aspects as possible that they will face in 2018.

Having already met the 2018 Commonwealth Games Canada nomination criteria in men’s and women’s singles, the Multi-Nations Event allowed Canada to focus on meeting the required top five finish for the men’s and women’s fours. With the women’s bronze and the men’s fours finishing 5th in this world class field, this goal was achieved.

In the other disciplines, the Canadian women finished 7th in singles and 6th in the pairs and triples.  The men finished 7th in the triples and 8th in the Singles and Pairs. “This experience has provided us with a clear direction as we focus on preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, “said BCB Executive Director Anna Mees.
