Softball Canada – Santo Domingo, D.R. – The Canadian Men’s National Team picked up its second win of the X Pan American Men’s Softball Championship by defeating Belize 11-1 in four innings. Belize held Canada to one run over the first two innings but was unable to keep the bats silent as the red and white scored six runs in the third and added four in the fourth for the run rule win.

Canada opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first when Kris Walushka (Victoria, B.C.) led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball following a walk by Kyle Ezekiel (Holyrood, N.L.) and scoring on a double steal attempt. However, Belize responded right away by getting a pair of walks to start the inning and the runner on second scored after a heady delayed steal of third with the throw from the catcher going into left field to tie the game 1-1.

Canada got a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second but the runner was caught stealing and the next two batters went down on a strikeout and a fly out. In the bottom half of the third, Canada quickly loaded the bases on a single to center by Blake Underwood (Port Elgin, Ont.), an error and a bunt single by Walushka. Ezekiel hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, followed by a passed ball to score Tyler Randerson (New Hamburg, Ont.) from third. A double to center by Kyle Cowick (Sooke, B.C.) brought another run in to score, with Cowick crossing the plate on a single to right by Bryn Redhead (Leduc, Alta.). Ben Wideman (Fergus, Ont.) capped the big inning with a two-run homerun over the left-center field fence as Canada built a 7-1 lead.

In the fourth, Underwood led off with a walk and Randerson reached on an error with both runners advancing to second and third on a passed ball. Ezekiel singled past the shortstop to bring Underwood in to score, and Cowick later hit a three-run blast to right to end the game on the run-ahead rule.

Cowick led Canada at the plate with a homerun, a double and four runs batted in while Wideman added a two-run blast and Ezekiel singled and drove in two.
