Brennan, McNulty top field after first round of Baka Wireless Ontario Public Player Championship
Golf Ontario – RICHMOND HILL— The Baka Wireless Ontario Public Player Championship kicked off on Aug. 29 at Diamondback Golf Club in Richmond Hill. A total of 60 players teed it up in three flights all looking for the final single men’s title of the provincial championship season.
The A Flight, gross score, had numerous players in contention. At the turn, a total of five were all tied for the lead at one-under. By the end of the day that number was narrowed down to two: Erin’s Cameron Brennan and Port Perry’s Jake McNulty. Brennan and McNulty each carded a one-under (71).
Brennan began with four pars before back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes. He added a bogey on the ninth but made the turn one-under. He dropped to two-under with a birdie on 14 but ended his round with a bogey on the 18th.
As for McNulty, he got out to a great start with birdies on the first and fifth holes. However, he would triple bogey the eighth and added a bogey on the ninth and was two-over heading to the back nine. He would make those strokes up early on the back nine. He birdied 10, 11 and 13 and held on to card his round of one-under.
Brennan and McNulty will begin the day one shot up on Willowdale’s Chris Willis, who sits alone in third at even par (72). Willis had an up-and-down front nine, with three birdies and three bogeys, but made the turn even. He dropped to one-under with a birdie on 11th but would bogey 14 and finished even.
In addition to the A Flight, there are two additional net flights. In the B Flight, Newmarket’s Doug McNeilis out in front after the opening round. McNeil made the turn at one-under net, and went on to play the back nine even to finish with a one-under (71) net score. McNeil holds a two-stroke advantage heading to tomorrow’s final round.
In the C Flight, also a net division, Toronto’s Joe Renzetti holds the lead. Renzettiwas three-over at the turn but played the back nine at six-under net. That allowed him to finish with a net score of three-under (69). He will take a five-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round.
