Battle lines drawn for free skates at  2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Keegan Messing is one step closer to a first career Canadian title after placing topping the men’s short program at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Messing, competing at his eight nationals, tabulated 92.61 points in his skate to Ed Sheeran’s Perfect. Defending champion Nam Nguyen of Toronto is second at 88.04 and Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., stands third at 85.02.

‘’When I went into my triple Axel I locked eyes with my wife in the crowd and it was like walking down the aisle again,’’ said Messing, from Sherwood Park, Alta. ‘’The most disappointing was my wobbly Lutz. It’s the most consistent jump I have still I managed to save it.’’

There’s a close battle in pairs as well with defending champions Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catharines, Ont., and Michael Marinaro of Sarnia, Ont., leading after the short program with 73.73. First-year partners Lubov Ilyushechkina of Toronto and Charlie Bilodeau of Trois-Pistoles, Que., tabulated 71.23 while Evelyn Walsh of London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud of Brantford, Ont., are third at 70.34.

‘’I’m a little down I don’t usually miss my jumps,’’ said Moore-Towers. ‘’I think it was just a minor lack of focus that led to an unfortunate step-out. For the most part I was pleased with our elements. We have a good takeaways, I’m just focused on my glaring error.’’

Ilyushechkina and Bilodeau were elated with their showing.

‘’We’re happy with how in control we were,’’ said Ilyushechkina. ‘’After the Grand Prix we came home and tried to work on our technique especially and we wound up having our best performance of the season.’’

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto grabbed the lead in ice dancing, scoring 88.86 for their short dance. World junior champions Marjorie Lajoie of Bouherville, Que.,  and Zachary Lagha of St-Hubert, Que., are second at 77.26 and Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver are third at 75.83.

Gilles and Poirier had issues with their costume during their skate.

‘’It was a really great skate for us and the costume mishap was a distraction that kind of settled us,’’ said Poirier. ‘’It took us out of the performance for a second and it forced us to regroup ourselves and really focus.’’

Lajoie and Lagha were pleased with how they impressed the judges.

‘’We didn’t want to go unnoticed here and show that we belonged,’’ said Lajoie. ‘’We know it’s a big step from junior to the senior level so we wanted our skating to be appreciated.’’

In women’s competition, Alicia Pineault of Varennes, Que., is the leader after the short program with 63.15 points. Madeline Schizas of Oakville, Ont., was second at 60.66 and two-time national champion Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket., is third at 59.51.

‘’I’m just happy that I feel healthy,’’ said Pineault, who did not compete at last year’s nationals.  ‘’It wasn’t perfect scenario today but I have great support from my friends and family and that’s really helping me here.’’

The free skates are on Saturday.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Keegan Messing, est un pas plus près de son premier titre canadien en carrière après s’être classé premier du programme court masculin aux championnats nationaux de patinage artistique Canadian Tire 2020.

Messing, qui participent à ses huitièmes championnats nationaux, a obtenu 92,61 points dans son premier programme au son de Perfect d’Ed Sheeran. Le champion en titre Nam Nguyen, de Toronto, est deuxième avec 88,04 et Roman Sadovsky, de Vaughan, en Ontario, troisième avec 85,02.

« Quand j’ai commencé mon triple Axel, j’ai capté le regard de ma femme et c’était comme parcourir l’allée de nouveau, a dit Messing, de Sherwood Park, en Alberta. Le plus décevant a été mon Lutz chancelant. C’est le saut le plus constant que j’ai. J’ai malgré tout réussi à le sauver. »

Il y a une chaude lutte en couples avec Kirsten Moore-Towers, de St. Catharines, en Ontario, et Michael Marinaro, de Sarnia, en Ontario, en tête après le programme court avec 73,73 points. Les partenaires de première année Lubov Ilyushechkina, de Toronto, et Charlie Bilodeau, de Trois-Pistoles, au Québec, en ont obtenu 71,23 tandis qu’Evelyn Walsh, de London, en Ontario, et Trennt Michaud, de Brantford, en Ontario, sont troisièmes avec 70,34.

« Je suis un peu déçue. Je ne rate pas habituellement mes sauts, a dit Moore-Towers. Je pense que cela n’était qu’un léger manque de concentration qui a conduit à un malheureux faux-pas. Pendant la majorité du programme, j’étais satisfaite de nos éléments. Nous avons de bons débuts. Je suis simplement concentrée sur mon éblouissante erreur. »

Ilyushechkina et Bilodeau étaient enchantés de leur performance.

« Nous sommes heureux d’à quel point nous étions en contrôle, a dit Ilyushechkina. Après le Grand Prix nous sommes revenus et avons essayé de travailler sur notre technique spécialement et nous avons présenté notre meilleure performance de la saison. »

Piper Gilles et Paul Poirier, de Toronto, ont pris la tête en danse avec 88,86 pour leur danse courte. Les champions du monde juniors Marjorie Lajoie, de Boucherville, au Québec, et Zachary Lagha, de St-Hubert, au Québec, sont deuxièmes avec 77,26 et Carolane Soucisse, de Châteauguay, au Québec, et Shane Firus, de North Vancouver, troisièmes avec 75,83.

Gilles et Poirier ont eu des problèmes avec leur costume pendant leur programme.

« C’était un vraiment excellent programme pour nous et c’était une distraction qui nous a en quelque sorte calmés, a dit Poirier. Cela nous a fait sortir de la performance pendant une seconde et cela nous a forcés à nous regrouper et à vraiment nous concentrer. »

Lajoie et Lagha étaient satisfaits de comment ils ont impressionné les juges.

« Nous ne voulions pas ne pas être remarqués ici et nous voulions montrer que nous avions notre place, a dit Lajoie. Nous savons que c’est un grand pas de junior au niveau senior, donc nous voulions que notre programme soit apprécié. »

Chez les femmes, Alicia Pineault, de Varennes, au Québec, est la meneuse après le programme court avec 63,15 points. Madeline Schizas, d’Oakville, en Ontario, est deuxième avec 60,66 et la double championne nationale Gabrielle Daleman, de Newmarket, troisième avec 59,51.

« Je suis simplement heureuse de me sentir en santé, a dit Pineault, qui n’a pas participé aux championnats nationaux l’an dernier. Ce n’était pas un scénario parfait aujourd’hui, mais j’ai eu beaucoup de soutien de mes amis et de ma famille et cela m’aide vraiment ici. »

Les programmes libres auront lieu samedi.
