Upcoming Events for March 24, 2017
  • It’s the final day of the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games!
  • Amiee Gordon and Philip Ste Marie will be the final skaters on the roster today, rounding out the competition in their respective races.
  • There will be some serious excitement at the floor hockey venue today as both Team Canada floor hockey teams (East & West) will be playing in gold medal games. Team West will take on South Africa at 8:30, while Team East will face rival Hungary at 11:30. Let’s go boys!
  • The final day of competition for alpine, cross country and figure skating was yesterday, so both teams are cheering on the remaining Team Canada athletes competing today.
  • Snowshoers will take part in the 400m and 1600m finals.
Highlights from March 23, 2017
  • With 8 speed skaters competing today, it was bound to be a day of medals for Team Canada. The Team hauled in 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.
  • Figure skaters continued to rack up the hardware at the rink, starting with Mike Sumner from Yukon winning silver in his tier on March 22nd and continuing into today with a total of 22 medals won out of a possible 23! Figure skaters dominated!
  • There were no floor hockey games today, so both teams were able to hit the streets and explore the beautiful city of Graz!
  • Alpine skiers kicked butt on their final day of competition, with 9 athletes winning 9 medals – 2 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze!
  • Snowshoers had another great day on the track! In the 4 x 400m relay, the women snagged gold and the men, silver! Later in the day, both our men’s 4 x 100m relay teams won gold and our ladies weren’t far behind, winning a silver in the 4 x 100 m relay.
  • Cross country skiers were racking up the medal haul as well, with Ernest Chua winning gold in the 500m and Allie Libertini winning silver in the 500m!
Interesting Facts
  • The Team Canada speed skating squad became fast friends with the skaters from Uzbekistan and in true Canadian fashion, gathered extra gear and Canadian clothing to give to the team, who came with little to nothing. The entire team is going home with hardware!
  • Floor hockey player from Team East, Steven Slezsak, showcases the true spirit of Games with the Facebook content he posted yesterday, writing:
    • “As tomorrow comes for the final game, I promise to practice as hard as I play and to play as hard as I practice. I will win with pride. I will lose with dignity. I will lead by example and always be a team player. I will honour the game and my community with the highest level of conduct. I will always raise my game. Let’s go and bring this thing home boys!”
The 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games are taking place in Austria from March 14 – 25, 2017. It is the largest sport and humanitarian event taking place anywhere in the world in 2017. The Games will host 3,000 athletes from 110 countries around the world.

Upcoming Events for March 23, 2017
  • We’ve got a busy day at the arena, with lots happening in figure and speed skating, including;
    • Final routines for levels 3 – 6 ice dance, ladies and men.
    • 8 speed skaters take to the track today in the 333m finals
  • Up in the mountains, the alpine team is gearing up for all levels of slalom finals.
  • Cross country skiers will be divisioning for the 2.5 km classic and free, as well as the finals for the 500m free.
  • Snowshoers will be competing in the 4 x 400m relay finals and the 4 x 100m finals.
  • After an intense day of games yesterday, both floor hockey East and West will get the day off to rest-up for the gold medal games tomorrow!
Highlights from March 22, 2017
  • Floor hockey Team West won a 3-shift seed game 2-0 against Ukraine to determine the next match-up. Team West then handily won their second game of the day 14-0 against Mexico.
  • Floor hockey Team East played Costa Rica and won 7-1, scoring their first two goals in the early minutes of the game.
  • Both East and West go on to the gold medal games in their divisions on Friday.
  • Alpine had a foggy but good day on the slopes completing divisioning for Slalom.
  • On the cross-country ski track, Elouise Stewart won gold in the 1km race, while the ladies in the 4 x 1km race continued the momentum with another gold in the top division.
  • Stephen Graham won a bronze medal in speedskating in the 1500m race, while Sarah Albers won Silver in the 222m.
  • Snowshoer Sebastien Hamel-Bordeau now holds the Special Olympics record in the 5km distance with a time of 21.55.90. Fellow teammates Crystal Young and Renee Pelletier each earned themselves a medal in the 5km as well, gold and silver respectively.
  • Snowshoeing athletes had an excellent showing in the 100m race with the following results awarded just this evening: 3 gold (Peter Snider, Janet Charchuck, Chrissy Peters), 1 silver (Tony Wilkinson), and 3 bronze (Julien Cardinal-Moffet, Darren Boryskavich, Floressa Harris).
Interesting Facts
  • Chris Anderson of floor hockey Team West has moved into a better living situation since he approached his coaches asking for help. Knowing he could rely on coaches for stability, direction, and support showed just how much being involved with Special Olympics and having a new support system has helped change his life for the better.
  • All three competitors in the 5km snowshoe race, Sebastien Hamel-Bourdeau, Crystal Young, and Renee Pelletier, were not only the only competitors in the race but they also all beat their personal bests!

Upcoming Events for March 22, 2017
  • Long distance speed skaters have their final race of the Games today, with the 1500m.
  • On the cross country track, the 4 x 1km relay finals and the 100m classic finals are taking place.
  • Snowshoers are all set for divisioning in 50m and 400m, as well as competing in the 5km finals.
  • Alpine skiers are hitting the slopes for divisioning for all levels of the slalom.
  • Floor hockey East will play the semi-final game against the tie-breaker winner of Costa Rica vs. Jamaica, while Team West has a 3-shift playoff against Ukraine to decide the number 1 seed. If there is no winner after the 3 shifts, it will go to sudden death. They will be play the semifinal tomorrow as well.
  • Figure skaters continue the second portion of their ice dance competition for both ladies and men.
 
Highlights from March 21, 2017
  • Floor hockey Team West battled back from a 4-3 deficit to beat South Africa 5-4.
  • In their first game floor hockey Team East beat Costa Rica 6-1, allowing the first goal against in the competition so far. In their game against Hungary, they lost 3-1.
  • Speed skaters continued their medal streak, finishing the day with 2 golds, 1 silver and a bronze.
  • After the first of two rounds of ice dance routines, Team Canada is sitting pretty with 4 individuals sitting in first place, 2 in second place and our ice dance pair in 1st place.
  • Snowshoers dominated again with the 200m finals, finishing the day with 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
  • Cross country ski athletes hauled some medals as well, with 2 silvers and a bronze in the 1km and a bronze in the 7.5km
  • Alpine athletes shone today with the Giant Slalom finals, snagging 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals
  • Family and friends in Graz gathered for a celebration of Team Canada in the evening at the skybar, a venue with beautiful views high above the city. All in attendance were treated to incredible stories of Team Canada’s resilience and determination at the Games.

Interesting Facts

  • Tyler Haddad, floor hockey Team West player, has lost 20 pounds since increasing his training regimen in preparation for Austria. He is now down to 165 pounds and is now consciously making healthier choices when it comes to his eating habits.
  • Darren Boryskavich is a hometown hero in Russell, Manitoba where his name and photo have been posted alongside Theory Fleury and Jon Montgomery. Jon Montgomery event sent Darren a video wishing him good luck at the Games in Austria!
