Fencing Canada – Weekend Wrap up: Kelleigh Ryan Finishes 5th at Div. 1 Foil NAC and Shirley Wang Finishes 6th in Women’s Epee at Cadet European Fencing Circuit event

Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) travelled to Long Island for the North American Cup (NAC) Division 1 event for Foil and finished 5th.  Ryan had a strong event, winning all of her poule bouts and defeating strong competitors on route to the quarter-finals.  Ryan’s only loss of the day was in her quarter-final bout against US National Team athlete Iman Blow, losing a heartbreaking 15-14 to advance to the medal round.  Blow went on to win bronze in the event.  Canada’s top male foil fencer was Sean Grant (Canadian living in the US) who finished 19th.

Canada’s young epee fencers travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark this past weekend to take part in the EFC Cadet Circuit.  Torontonian Shirley Wang (Vango/TFC, Toronto, ON) was Canada’s top Canadian, finishing 6th out of 122 fencers from 24 nations.

Following the poules round, Wang defeated Sarah Spice from Great Britain 15-10 to advance to the 32’s.  There she faced Estonian Sandra Skoblov, winning 15-11.  In the 16’s, Wang defeated Italian Marta Lombardi 15-11 but her day came to an end in the quarter-finals against Estonian Karoline Loit.  Wang lost a close 15-13 to the eventual bronze medalist of the event.

Christina Zozulya (Dynamo, Richmond, BC) also finished in the top 16’s.  Zozulya lost her 16’s bout 15-10 to finish in 15th overall.  Canada’s top male cadet epee fencer was Seraphim Jarov (Dynamo, Surrey, BC) who finished in 25th place overall out of 165 participants.

In the women’s team competition, Canada 1 finished in 9th place, while Canada 2 was in 10th overall.  Canada 1, composed of Shirley Wang (Vango/TFC, Toronto, ON), Christina Zozulya (Dynamo, Richmond, BC), Natasha Kis-Toth (Dynamo, Richmond, BC), and Emily Mason (Dynamo, Pitt Meadows, BC) lost a very close 44-43 to Finland in their round of 16 bout which took them out of the medal round.  They then went on to defeat Sweden 45-33, and Great Britain 45-43.  In their final bout, Canada 1 faced Canada 2 for the 9-10th ranking.  It was a very close bout with Canada 1 coming out on top 40-39 to take the top spot of 9th

Canada 2 made up of Justine Boudreau (STH, Sherbrooke, QC), Shirley Guo (TFC, North York, ON), Vanessa Dib (TFC, Richmond Hill, ON) and Ariane Leonard (OM, Saint-Lambert, QC) followed a similar path.  The team lost their first bout to Russia 2 45-38.  They then defeated Great Britain 3 45-33 and Italy 3 43-38 before losing to Canada 1 to finish 10th overall.

Canada’s top Men’s Team ranked 10th overall was Canada 1, composed of Seraphim Jarov (Dynamo, Surrey, BC), Victor Cheng (Vango, Richmond Hill, ON), Fynn Fafard (Dynamo, Roberts Creek, BC) and Rick Wu (TFC, Toronto, ON).  The team defeated Canada 2 45-30 in the 32’s, but then lost 45-38 to Russia 2 in the 16’s.  Canada 1 then handily defeated Great Britain 2 45-25, and Estonia 45-31 to advance to the 9-10th placing bout.  Canada lost to Romania a close 45-43 to take 10th place overall.  Canada 2 was ranked 24th in the event.
