Swimming Canada – MONACO – Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivieres, Que., earned her first career international victory on Sunday with a golden performance in the women’s 400-m freestyle to conclude the first stop on the Mare Nostrum swimming circuit.

Harvey, tuning up for next month’s FINA World Championships, clocked four minutes and 12.26 seconds. Leah Neale of Australia was second in 4:17.03 and her compatriot Elyse Woods third in 4:21.57.

Harvey was also fourth in the 200-m breaststroke missing a berth on the podium by about half a second.

Canada also earned a silver medal in the men’s 400-m individual medley with Robert Hill of North Vancouver placing second in 4:24.01. Benjamin Gratz of Hungary took the gold in 4:19.23 and Tomas Elliott of Australia was third in 4:25.64.

‘’It was a fairly strong race,’’ said Hill, who’ll represent Canada at the World University Games this summer. ‘’I put together a good back end. It was right where I want to be for this part of the season.’’

Montana Champagne of Ottawa was sixth in the same race in 4:29.58.

‘’I swam it reasonably to what I wanted,’’ said Champagne. ‘’The first 200 was good and then I started tightening up and it just got harder and harder during the race.’’

Champagne was also sixth in the 200-m backstroke.

The second stop on the circuit is this Tuesday and Wednesday in Barcelona.
