Canadian Sport Institute Pacific – Some of the brightest coaching minds in Canada will come together to deliver educational opportunities for high performance coaches and share their experiences – from provincial games all the way to the Olympic and Paralympic Games – at the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s International Coaching School from May 27 to June 3 in Victoria, BC.
 
The 2017 edition of the International Coaching School is expected to be the largest ever attended, with extra sessions already added to accommodate additional registrations. The event will be attended by six coaches from the Japan Sport Council, including four-time Olympic wrestling champion Kaori Icho.
 
“With the next three Olympic and Paralympic Games set to be held in Asia, this is an exciting opportunity for our organization to collaborate with members of the Japan Sport Council and share coaching philosophies,” said Canadian Sport Institute Pacific CEO Wendy Pattenden. “We look forward to welcoming all coaches to Victoria for an excellent eight days of professional development.”
 
The International Coaching School provides coaches with two streams to become world-class leaders: the Sport Performance Coaching Certificate and the High Performance Coach Advance.
 
The Sport Performance Coaching Certificate stream offers coaches enhanced training in the NCCP Competition-Development modules in an interactive multi-sport setting. Coaches will have the opportunity to complete up to eight NCCP modules, as well as earn the Sport Performance Coaching Certificate from the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, in only one week.
 
The High Performance Coach Advance is geared toward Varsity, Provincial, National, and Advanced Coaching Diploma (NCI) alumni coaches working with athletes in the ‘Train to Train’ through to the ‘Train to Win’ stages of the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathway.
 
This year’s theme is “Pathways to Enhanced Coaching” and will explore coaching pathways and transitions that help coaches maximize athlete potential in high performance sport. The High Performance Coach Advance is a critical professional tool for coaches who wish to better understand the support mechanisms that can lead to better quality coaching.
 
“Coaching as a career is tough. The multitude of job tasks, uncertainty in contracts, and balancing workloads contribute and/or detract from the coach’s ability to consistently perform,” explained Canadian Sport Institute Pacific Coaching and Systems Development Lead David Hill. “This year’s Advance will be instrumental in helping coaches understand how their well-being ultimately affects athlete performance. More importantly, it will assist coaches in identifying strategies that help them maintain their own optimal state of performance.”
 
The International Coaching School will take place at Canadian Sport Institute Pacific’s Victoria campus at PISE, located at 4371 Interurban Road. Courses and sessions will be facilitated by professionals with coaching, managerial, and training backgrounds at local, provincial, national, and international levels.
 
Facilitators include those from Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Coaching Association of Canada, Douglas College, One Smart World, Own The Podium, Royal Roads University and the University of British Columbia.
