Szeryk catapults to top spot at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship
Golf Ontario – ELMIRA – The two first-round leaders fell on the leaderboard during the second round of the Investors Group Ontario Junior Girls’ Championship, July 5 at the Elmira Golf Club. With both Niagara Falls’ Emily Ward and Richmond Hill’s Emily Zhu dropping back, other competitors were able to strive.
The main benefactor was London’s Ellie Szeryk. The 15-year-old had another consistent round, firing even par (70), bringing her two-day total to three-over par (73-70-143). She will take a four-shot lead into the third round.
Following her is Maple’s Alyssa DiMarcantonio, from Station Creek Golf Club. DiMarcantonio, a member of Team Ontario, was three-over (73) on the round and now has a two-day total of seven-over (74-73-147).
Szeryk and DiMarcantonio will battle it out tomorrow to see who will have the advantage going into the final round.
The remaining players inside the top five still have a shot, if tomorrow goes according to plan. Markham’s Hailey McLaughlin (77-74-151) and Toronto’s Sarah Beqaj (76-75-151) are sitting tied for third with a two-day total of eleven-over. Toronto’s Sydney Naro sits one back of the tie for third at twelve-over par (78-74-152). With many players all fighting for third spot it will be interesting to see who makes a push heading into the final day.
After the round, the field was cut to the lowest 42 scores. The cut was set at 16-over (179). The third round begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. and admission for spectators is free. Yet another hot day is expected in Elmira tomorrow, so the players will have to battle through the heat.
