Golf Ontario – HUNTSVILLE— Tomorrow will be a shot at redemption for the current leaders during the final round of Golf Ontario’s Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, from Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville. Round two, June 14, saw new leaders emerge as Kitchener’s Ryan Kings and London’s Charles Fitzsimmons both moved to two-under for the tournament and into a share of the lead.

Kings and Fitzsimmons have been in contention at the Ontario Mid-Amateur before. For Kings, a Deer Ridge Golf Club member, it was just a year ago when he took the lead into the final round only to fall short in a playoff. As for Fitzsimmons, from The Thornhill Club, he held the opening round lead back in 2014 but gave it up during the second and was unable to get back to the top of the leaderboard.

Both players had stellar second round. Kings came into the day even after an opening round 72. He shot a two-under (70) during the second day to sit at two-under (72-70-142) for the tournament. Kings also leads the Mid-Masters (40+) Division.

As for Fitzsimmons he fired the round of the day, a four-under (68). That brought his tournament total to two-under (74-68-142), after his opening round of two-over (74).

Currently in third place is Peterborough’s Michael Farrugia who sits at one-over (72-73-145). Farrugia, from Peterborough Golf & Country Club, followed up his even par (72) opening round with a one-over (73) in the second round. Farrugia is also no stranger to strong results at the Ontario Mid-Amateur, as he finished T2 back in 2014.

Following the top three are five players all tied at two-over. The group includes: Burlington’s Matthew Ion Young (73-73-146), Richmond Hill’s Christian McCullough (72-74-146), Toronto’s Kevin Fawcett (72-74-146), Toronto’s T.J. Rule (76-70-146), and Brampton’s Dave Bunker (71-75-146).

After the round the field was cut to the lowest 60 scores and ties. The cut was set at 16-over (160) and 63 players advanced to tomorrow’s final round. The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 10:50 a.m. As always admission for spectators is free.
