Freestyle Canada – A new version of the competition awaits the athletes

Breckenridge, December 8, 2016 – Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, Alex Bellemare, Evan McEachran, Kaya Turski and Yuki Tsubota all have their passes for the 2016 edition of the Dew Tour, a key event on the AFP’s calendar, which will be held from December 8 to 11 in Breckenridge, Colorado. This year, the event has been revamped and proposes a two-part slopestyle course. The avowed goal of this change is to “break the mould of skiing competitions and challenge today’s standards.“ In this year’s competition, athletes will have to perform a jump run followed by a jib run with five, multifaceted features.

“I think it will be an interesting event to start off the season, since the new DewTour format proposes a simplified, two-part course. It will be like performing part of a Big Air and part of a Rail Jam course,” explains Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, who will participate in his first pipe competition since he was injured last year. “And since this event is not part of the Olympic selection process, we will begin the season with less pressure on our shoulders compared to the previous years, and that’s great!”

In addition to offering a revamped course, the 2016 Dew Tour competition has no qualification round, which means that athletes will directly enter into the finals, scheduled for Friday, December 9 for the women’s, and December 11 for the men’s.

Among those of the national team, Yuki Tsubota is the skier who had had the best performance last year at the Dew Tour by taking fifth place in the slopestyle competition for women. “We have never participated in this type of competition, but it should be interesting. We must perform four jumps, and our two best scores will count toward the final score, followed by our best pipe run out of three. These three scores will be added together to give our final result,” explains Yuki Tsubota, who is ready to take on the challenge, as she has learned new tricks on the pipes and refined her jumps. “I believe I have two jumps that will give me good scores, so I am confident and eager to perform them in competition.”

For slopestyle athletes, this competition is not their first of the season, as some of them participated in the Big Air event in Milan last November.

On another note, Dew Tour organizers have had to cancel the halfpipe competitions due to lack of snow. Athletes of the Canadian halfpipe team will therefore begin their season with the World Cup in Copper Mountain, Colorado from December 15 to 17.
