Freestyle Canada – Font Romeu, France –Alex Bellemare and Anouk Purnelle-Faniel took charge under challenging conditions in Font Romeu and both earned bronze medals. This is a great start to the New Year for the slopestyle team as they’ve managed to transfer their momentum from Dew Tour to the World Cup circuit.

Knowing that conditions might be unfavourable for a final, Alex Bellemare shifted strategies and laid it all out in the qualifying round, where he qualified 3rd. The challenging conditions forced the organizing committee to use the qualification round results as final results.

‘’Both my qualifying runs were identical, but the second was much cleaner. My rail tricks were pretty stock, but I sent a double twelve right into a switch double twelve to the left and finished with a double 1080 to the left. I skied my Qualifications anticipating that they counted as my final runs. On the flipside, we know that the FIS typically pushes for the events to move forward. I wasn’t too surprised, and I think that advantaged me,’’ said bronze medallist Alex Bellemare.

Anouk Purnelle-Faniel, took a similar strategy to Alex, and laid down a clean consistent run during her one and only qualification run. Challenging conditions made it difficult on the women, as they were supposed to have their qualification round on Friday. Anouk finished third, as the fields qualification run was used as a final result. This was her return to competition after a year and a half of rehabilitation.

‘’We just had one qualification run, so it was the only run that counted. I landed a 720 both ways. We really didn’t get much time to practise, and it was my first competition since my injury. It had been a year and a half since I last competed. Due to conditions, I didn’t execute the run I was hoping for, but I’m happy to have landed on my feet with one run,’’ stated Anouk Purnelle-Faniel.

Yuki Tsubota, was the only other Canadian finishing within the top 10, as she landed in 7th after the single qualification run.

The Canadian slopestyle team is off to a strong start to the season. They are showing the world their depth of athletes and will look to carry this momentum into XGames mid-January.
