Bowls Canada Boulingrin – (Victoria, B.C.)   Canada’s best bowlers battled it out on the beautiful greens of the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowling Club to determine who would be crowned this year’s national champions.

It was a battle of the brothers in men’s pairs as Ontario’s Dave and Rob Steffen won a decisive victory to claim gold over Saskatchewan brothers and defending champions Jon and Michael Pituley.  The final score was 20-8 after 15 ends. In bronze medal action, Alberta pair Greg Wilson and Derek Dillon won bronze over Nova Scotia’s Terry O’Neil and Doug McLearn with a final score of 19-11.

In the men’s triples, Saskatchewan’s Alex Scott, Grant Wilkie, and Murray Pituley claimed the gold (18-10) over Ontario’s Wayne Wright, Jim Roth and Tom Roth.  The men’s triples bronze medal match was a battle to the last bowl with Steve Ogden, Steve Bezanson and Mike Hadley of Nova Scotia narrowly defeating Lyall Mix, Everett Zwiers, and Scott Fisher of Ontario with a final score of 22-21.  

It was a golden morning for Alberta skip Pat Bird and his teammates Lyall Adams, Francis Standen and Herman Cooper of Alberta as they defeated Ontario’s Gord Legacy, Martin Foxhall, Earle Friedman and David Llewellyn with a final score of 18-9.  British Columbia’s Christie Grahame, Stephen Yung, Stanley Chow and Clement Law won the bronze medal match against Ontario’s Dave Houtby, Murray Wright, Barry Mills and Ian Macpherson in a final score of 24-10.

The mother-daughter duo of Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong and Clarice Fitzpatrick (Winnipeg, Manitoba) defeated Nova Scotia’s Lena Cameron and Patti Granville with a score of 22-15 to claim gold.  British Columbia pair Lynda Robbins and Patricia Levie won the bronze over Ontario’s Cindy Higgins and Carol Finlayson in a final score of 19-10.

In the women’s triples, Laila Hassan, Chrystal Shephard, and Helena Ho won gold with a decisive 22-8 victory over British Columbia’s Jenny Siu, Rainbow Lung, and Lisa Cheung in the gold medal game.  Jan Robinson, Jennifer MacDonald, and Pat Vos of Alberta took the bronze medal with a 21-19 victory over Ontario’s Sue Roth, Michelle Whitehead, and Laurie Roth.

British Columbia’s Josephine Lee, Pricilla Westlake, Sarina Mak, and Gigi Chan continued their winning ways with a gold medal win over Manitoba rink Elaine Jones, Betty Van Walleghem, Brenda Frank, and Sandra Mulholland (17-9). British Columbia was undefeated throughout the week long competition.  The bronze medal was claimed by British Columbia’s Mary Wright, Annie Mathie, Belle Chan, and Anne Van Bastelaere with their win over Nova Scotia’s Debbie Foster, Tammy Foster-Veinot, Lorraine Bezanson, and Jackie Foster (23-12).

Next year’s championship will be hosted in Regina, Saskatchewan.
