Archery Canada – SHANGHAI, May 15, 2017 – The four-man team of Hamilton Nguyen, Brandon Xuereb, Conner Sorley, and Brian Maxwell arrived on Saturday, four days prior to the Ranking Round of the Shanghai 2017 Hyundai Archery World Cup to be held on Wednesday morning at 9am local time.

Led by Shawn Riggs as the project’s head coach, the team is looking at this first World Cup of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics quadrennial as an important tournament to gauge their performance potential just over three years out from Tokyo. In particular, three of the four Canadian men are coming off a busy winter in a centralized training environment in Toronto where a lot of focus was put on technical evaluation and adjustment, along with a high degree of almost daily competition amongst the 7 members of the National Training Squad (NTS) residing in Southern Ontario.

“All aspects of building our increasingly competitive Daily Training Environment (DTE) in Toronto have been viewed as positive by the athletes. We have seen strong results early on in the season in California (February), and Arizona (April), and we want to see how we can continue to translate the work from the DTE into success in World Cup competition”, states Riggs, who further added, “ this is a competition with some of the best archers in the world, and we need to test a number of processes and protocols, along with our ability to consistently implement our individual performance plans. This is about the athletes getting it right across the technical, physiological, and mental performance domains.”

Canada’s team is still relatively inexperienced with Sorley only at his second World Cup, Xuereb at his fourth, and Nuygen, as the veteran of this group, competing at his 6th World Cup. For Maxwell, this is his first World Cup.The team’s focus in Shanghai is very much on the process, with the results being theultimate outcome of effectively following a detailed plan.  “Results are always important, but you need to do a lot of things well, all of which ultimately combine into sustainable success. Collectively, we are working on getting all of the details executed in an optimal manner”, concludes Riggs.
