Canada Captures a Gold and a Bronze in the 2016 WTF World Taekwondo Junior Championships
Taekwondo Canada – (Ottawa, Canada) The 11th WTF World Taekwondo Junior Championships hosted by Taekwondo Canada and organized by Burnaby Tourism last week has been described as a huge success. The five-day event welcomed 846 athletes and 458 officials from 102 countries. Athletes age from 14 to 17 years old competed in 20 different weight divisions. Canadian athletes captured a gold and a bronze in the championships.
Skylar Park won the gold medal in the -59kg weight class after she managed to defeat (20-8) Yen Hsin Yeh in the finals match by point gap. In the male -73kg weight class, Zachary Hiebert conceded defeat to Seung-Min Lee in the semi-final round to earn Canada a bronze medal.
Skylar Park was named female MVP during the closing ceremony.
Taekwondo Canada wants to thank Tourism Burnaby and the World Taekwondo Federation for delivering such an amazing event. Without the dedicated support of the event staff and volunteers, this event would not have been delivered so professionally.
We also want to thank all Canadian players, coaches, and officials who were involved in this competition. The performance and the dedication of Canadian athletes, coaches and officials at the Championships were absolutely impressive and it is obvious that taekwondo is growing across the country because of their hard work.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is only four years away. Many countries have used this competition as an opportunity to gain experience before competing in the qualifiers of the 2020 Olympics Games. “We want to send our best wishes to these Canadian athletes and coaches who represented us and our country so well as a team and our taekwondo ambassadors.” said Darlene McDonald – Taekwondo Canada Executive Director. “Taekwondo Canada is looking forward to seeing taekwondo’s participation growth and international accomplishments increase after this event.”
