Athletics Nova Scotia – Athletics Nova Scotia, the sport governing body for track and field in Nova Scotia, will host Atlantic Canada largest indoor track and field meet this upcoming weekend.   Day 1 events of the The Athletics NS Indoor Open and Club Track and Field Championships will take place Jan 21 at Canada Games Centre in Halifax on Saturday and Day 2 events on Jan 22 will take place at the CougarDome in Truro on Sunday.  Over 400 athletes will compete in track and field events over 2 days and gain points to be named the Indoor Club Champions for 2017.  The best age class and Atlantic University Sports athletes from across Atlantic Canada will be competing in events ranging from 60m up to 3000m to hurdles, triple jump,  long jump and high jump.  On Day 2, we will host indoor shot put and weight throw.  Our youngest competitors start at 4 years old and will participate in the Tetrathlon, an event aimed at young children to introduce them to the fundamental skills of track and field.  Each of those participants will take part in the 60m, 600m, shot put and long jump.  Our masters competitors, those aged 35 and up, will compete in a host of events truly demonstrating that our sport can keep you Active for Life.

“We are truly overwhelmed with the participation numbers at this event,” says Anitra Stevens, Executive Director of Athletics NS. “It’s our biggest indoor meet EVER and our membership numbers have already exceeded where they were last year at this time.  We couldn’t do this without the support of our member clubs, university partners, volunteers, officials and host facilities.  This is an important Canada Games year, and we will see our best track and field athletes compete this weekend chasing results to position themselves well for the 2017 Canada Games team selection, taking place in June.   Our sport is growing with the support and dedication of so many”.

Events start Saturday at 9am and Sunday at 12:30pm.
