Dunne brings extensive sport science, long-term athlete development, Olympic and Paralympic experience to HPD position

VICTORIA— With a deeply rooted background in sport science and leadership, Phil Dunne joins Triathlon Canada effective September 26, 2022, as High-Performance Director with the ultimate goal of developing the sport’s Olympic and Paralympic programs to allow more Canadians athletes to reach the international podium.

In previous roles within Sport Institutes in Canada and Ireland, as well as with the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and Own the Podium (OTP), Dunne has honed his skills working with and leading multi-disciplinary, integrated support teams across a range of Olympic and Paralympic programs and events. In his most recent role at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, he was tasked with supporting targeted sports in building successful performance pathways for both athletes and coaches to support them in their development and progress towards the podium.

“Having observed both of Canada’s Triathlon programs – Olympic and Paralympic – from a distance in my previous roles, I am very excited to start working with the high performance team to deliver the resources and support the athletes and coaches need to achieve our goals,” said Dunne, who brings extensive experience working with athletes in various sports from the club to provincial to elite levels.“The community must work together if we want to achieve our collective goals. Together, with the support of our provincial sport organizations and entire staff, the focus will be to support and sustain podium performances throughout the performance pathway – from the grassroots level to our Olympic and Paralympic best – help them reach their full potential in addition to strengthening the pool of athletes and coaches across the country.”

Dunne’s experience at the provincial, national, and elite international level – both as a practitioner and administrator – has been built on a philosophy of relationship-building and mentorship. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science from the University of Wales, and he completed his Masters in Sport Performance Analysis at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

“Phil brings a breadth of skills and experience in sport science, sports medicine, and multi-sport Games planning and delivery, but just as importantly, his last four years have been spent working very closely with key partners within the Canadian sport system,” said Joe Morissette, Chief Executive Officer, Triathlon Canada. “His approach will benefit the entire Triathlon Canada Nation, and we look forward to having him on our team as we continue to build towards Paris 2024 and beyond.”

Dunne’s new role will see him relocate to Triathlon Canada’s headquarters in Victoria by end-of-year.

Dunne apporte une grande expérience en science du sport, développement à long terme de l’athlète et Olympiques et Paralympiques au poste de DHP

VICTORIA — Avec une grande expérience en science du sport et en leadership, Phil Dunne se joindra à Triathlon Canada le 26 septembre 2022 en tant que directeur de haute performance avec comme objectif ultime de développer les programmes olympiques et paralympiques du sport pour permettre à plus de Canadiens d’atteindre les podiums internationaux.

Dans ses postes précédents avec les instituts du sport au Canada et en Irlande, ainsi qu’avec le Comité paralympique canadien (CPC) et À nous le podium (ANP), Dunne a affiné ses compétences en travaillant avec des équipes de soutien intégré multidisciplinaires et en les dirigeant à la tête de plusieurs programmes et compétitions olympiques et paralympiques. Dans le cadre de son dernier poste à l’institut canadien du sport Ontario, il devait épauler plusieurs sports ciblés en créant des parcours de performances fructueux pour les athlètes et les entraîneurs afin de les accompagner dans leur développement et leur progression vers le podium.

« Après avoir observé les programmes de triathlon olympiques et paralympiques au Canada à distance dans mes anciens postes, je suis très heureux de commencer à travailler avec l’équipe de haute performance pour offrir les ressources et l’aide dont les athlètes et les entraîneurs ont besoin pour atteindre nos objectifs, » dit Dunne, qui apporte une grande expérience de travail avec des athlètes dans différents sports des clubs et des provinces jusqu’à l’élite. « La communauté doit travailler à l’unisson si nous voulons atteindre nos objectifs communs. Ensemble, avec l’aide des organisations provinciales de sport et du personnel, nous nous concentrerons à faciliter et à maintenir les performances de podium dans le parcours de performance, du niveau communautaire à l’élite olympique et paralympique, pour les aider à atteindre leur plein potentiel en plus d’améliorer notre bassin d’athlètes et d’entraîneurs au pays. »

L’expérience de Dunne au niveau provincial, national et international élite, tant que tant que praticien qu’administrateur, s’est bâtie selon une philosophie de création de relations et de mentorat. Il détient un baccalauréat en science du sport de l’université du Pays de Galles et une maîtrise en analyse des performances sportives de la Cardiff Metropolitan University.

« Phil possède de nombreuses compétences et une grande expérience en science du sport, médecine sportive et planification et prestation de Jeux multisports, mais il a également passé les quatre dernières années à travailler de près avec des partenaires clés du système sportif canadien, » explique Joe Morissette, directeur général de Triathlon Canada. « Son approche va être bénéfique pour toute la Nation Triathlon Canada et nous avons hâte de l’avoir dans notre équipe pour continuer notre préparation pour Paris 2024 et au-delà. »

Dunne sera relocalisé dans les bureaux de Triathlon Canada à Victoria d’ici la fin de l’année.
