Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games – Day 2 Women’s Softball Recap

The preliminary round games concluded on Day 3 at Southward Park with a pair of three-way ties for first place in each of the two pools, setting up some excellent matchups for the first day of playoff action on Wednesday.

Manitoba 10 vs. Prince Edward Island 1

Manitoba jumped out to a quick lead by starting the top of the first with singles by Abbi Conrad and Janique Balcaen followed by an RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly. PEI responded right away in the bottom of the first when Belle Ashley led off with a double and later scored on a single by Ally Hustler. A run-scoring single by Annabeth Carlberg put Manitoba up 3-1 in the second, and they added two more runs in the fourth when Janaya Watt tripled and scored on a single by Conrad, who later scored on an error. Carlberg hit another RBI single in the fifth with Danika Nell adding a two-run single to right later followed by a two-run single by Lindsey Gundrum. Alexa Guilford picked up her second win in the pitcher’s circle.

Quebec 7 vs. New Brunswick 0

Coming off an emotional win on Monday night, Quebec picked up where they left off on Tuesday morning by opening the scoring on three consecutive singles by Valerie Sigouin, Naomi Pelletier and Emily Meloche. The next inning, Naomi Cohen hit a run-scoring single followed by a two-run triple to right by Sigouin, who crossed the plate on a ground out for the 5-0 lead. Quebec proceeded to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth and scored two runs on a single by Alexia Chevrier to earn the run rule win. Jessica Mallette earned the shutout win for Quebec, while Kate Parker took the loss. Abby Randell singled twice for New Brunswick with Sami Tonge adding a single of her own.

Saskatchewan 2 vs. British Columbia 0

Saskatchewan forced a three-way tie for first with a tidy 2-0 win over British Columbia in a fantastic pitching matchup between Saskatchewan’s Jorde Chartrand and Team BC’s Morgan Reimer. Saskatchewan scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Makena Simmons walked, was sacrificed to second and scored after a pair of illegal pitches. The score remained the same until Saskatchewan added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Olivia Woytiuk driving a run with a single for Saskatchewan’s only hit of the game. Team BC managed three hits off Chartrand, including a double by Madelyn McKinnon, but was unable to bring anyone in to score as Chartrand earned the shutout victory, striking out eight batters. Reimer struck out nine over six innings.

Prince Edward Island 3 vs. Nova Scotia 0

PEI picked up its first win of the tournament in a close ball game. The game was scoreless through three innings before PEI opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Ally Hustler led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third by tagging up on a fly out to right and scoring on a wild pitch. The following inning, PEI took advantage of a walk and two errors to load the bases before Marley Gaudet singled to center to add a run. Team PEI loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh before scoring their third run on a hit by pitch. Hustler singled twice and Kate Doyle added a double for PEI, while Kaiti Ellsworth singled twice for Nova Scotia. Andrea Caron earned the shutout win with Temma Parson being saddled with the loss.

Quebec 13 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 1

Quebec opened the scoring with four runs in the first on an RBI double by Naomi Pelletier, another on a single by Annabelle Guay and two more on errors. Newfoundland & Labrador got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Shilo Chislett led off with a triple and scored on a ground out. Two more Newfoundland errors led to two runs scoring in the second, with Emily Meloche and Lea Frechette each adding RBI singled followed by a two-run double by Guay to make the score 9-1. Bonnie Zachary doubled and scored on a ground out for Quebec in the third, while a run-scoring error and a two-run single by Meloche in the bottom of the fifth rounded out the scoring. Jessica Mallette earned the win with Jordyn Rose getting tagged with the loss.

Ontario 13 vs. Alberta 5

Ontario forced a three-way tie for first with an offensive explosion over Alberta. Michaela Tuck and Kaitlyn Kim hit back-to-back doubles to open the scoring, with Kim crossing the plate on a single to third by Deanna Grahek. The next inning, Ontario put two runners on base before Katina Duscio hit a three-run homerun to right, and later added another run on a wild pitch to take an early 6-0 lead. In the fourth, Duscio doubled and scored on a single by Kim before Sierra Baltzer hit a two-run shot to right. Alberta got a rally going in the bottom of the inning, starting out with a single and a double before Avery Terpsma hit an RBI single to center, later followed by an RBI groundout, a run-scoring single by Taylor Farrer and a double by Gabriela Coderre to make the score 9-4. Ontario proceeded to load the bases and added two runs on a single by Kim, then got a two-run triple by Kait Achtermaier. Paige Simpson led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored on a single by Katelyn Jeglum, but that was as close as they would get.

In Pool A, British Columbia (3-1) finished first place on the tiebreaker due to having the least amount of runs scored against (2) in the games between the tied teams, while Manitoba (3-1) took second place based on their head-to-head win over Saskatchewan (3-1). Prince Edward Island (1-3) finished fourth and Nova Scotia (0-4) fifth.

In Pool B, Quebec (3-1) took top spot on the tiebreaker for allowing the least amount of runs scored against (8), followed by Ontario (3-1) who defeated Alberta (3-1) in their head-to-head matchup. New Brunswick (1-3) took fourth place followed by Newfoundland & Labrador (0-4) in fifth.

Playoff matchups on Wednesday will be:

C1 (Game 21) 10:00am: PEI (4A) vs. NL (5B) – Diamond #1
C2 (Game 22) 11:00am: NB (4B) vs. NS (5A) – Diamond #2
C3 (Game 23) 12:30pm: BC (1A) vs. ON (2B) – Diamond #1
C4 (Game 24) 1:30pm: QC (1B) vs. MB (2A) – Diamond #2
C5 (Game 25) 3:00pm: Winner C1 vs. AB (3A) – Diamond #1
C5 (Game 26) 6:30pm: Winner C2 vs. SK (3A) – Diamond #2
P1 (Game 27) 7:00pm: Loser C1 vs. Loser C2 – Diamond #1 (9th Place Game)

Jeux du Canada Niagara 2022 Résumé du Jour 2 de softball féminin

La ronde préliminaire s’est terminée lors du Jour 3 au parc Southward avec une paire d’égalités à trois équipes pour la première place dans chacune des deux divisions, préparant la scène pour des excellents affrontements lors de la première journée des séries éliminatoires mercredi.
 
Manitoba 10 c. Île-du-Prince-Édouard 1
 
Le Manitoba a rapidement pris les devants en commençant le début de première manche avec des simples d’Abbi Conrad et Janique Balcaen suivi d’un roulant d’un point et d’un ballon sacrifice. L’Î.-P.-É. a tout de suite répondu en fin de première lorsque Belle Ashley a commencé avec un double et a plus tard a marqué sur un simple d’Ally Hustler. Un simple d’Annabeth Carlberg a permis au Manitoba de prendre une avance de 3 à 1 en deuxième, et ils ont ajouté deux autres points en quatrième lorsque Janaya Watt a triplé et marqué sur un simple de Conrad, qui a ensuite marqué sur une erreur. Carlberg a frappé un autre simple d’un point en cinquième tandis que Danika Nell a ajouté un simple de deux points à droite plus tard suivi d’un simple de deux points par Lindsey Gundrum. Alexa Guilford a remporté sa deuxième victoire dans le cercle des lanceuses.
 
Québec 7 c. Nouveau-Brunswick 0
 
Après une victoire émouvante lundi soir, le Québec a continué sur sa lancée mardi matin en ouvrant le pointage avec trois simples consécutifs de Valérie Sigouin, Naomi Pelletier et Emily Meloche. La manche suivante, Naomi Cohen a frappé un simple d’un point suivi d’un triple de deux points à droite par Sigouin, qui a traversé le marbre sur un roulant pour prendre les devants 5 à 0. Le Québec a rempli les buts en fin de quatrième et a marqué deux points sur un simple d’Alexia Chevrier pour gagner sur le rèeglement de pointage. Jessica Mallette a remporté le jeu blanc pour le Québec, tandis que Kate Parker a subi la défaite. Abby Randell a inscrit deux simples pour le Nouveau-Brunswick et Sami Tonge a ajouté un simple.
 
Saskatchewan 2 c. Colombie-Britannique 0
 
La Saskatchewan a forcé une égalité à trois équipes pour la première place avec une victoire serrée de 2 à 0 contre la Colombie-Britannique dans un excellent affrontement de lanceuses entre Jorde Chartrand de la Saskatchewan et Morgan Reimer de la Colombie-Britannique. La Saskatchewan a marqué son premier point en fin de première manche lorsque Makena Simmons a obtenu un but sur balles, a été sacrifiée au deuxième et a marqué après une paire de lancers illégaux. Le pointage est demeuré le même jusqu’à ce que la Saskatchewan ajoute un point d’assurance en fin de sixième alors qu’Olivia Woytiuk a produit un point avec un simple pour le seul coup sûr du match de la Saskatchewan. L’équipe de la Colombie-Britannique a réussi trois coups sûrs contre Chartrand, dont un double de Madelyn McKinnon, mais n’a pu amener personne au marbre alors que Chartrand a remporté la victoire par jeu blanc, retirant huit frappeuses sur des prises. Reimer a retiré neuf frappeuses au bâton en six manches.
 
Île-du-Prince-Édouard 3 c. Nouvelle-Écosse 0
 
L’Î.-P.-É. a remporté sa première victoire du tournoi dans un match serré. Le match a été sans pointage après trois manches avant que l’Î.-P.-É. a ouvert la marque en début de quatrième lorsqu’Ally Hustler a commencé avec un simple, a volé le deuxième but, a avancé au troisième but sur un ballon au champ droite et a marqué sur un mauvais lancer. La manche suivante, l’Î-P.-É. a profité d’un but sur balles et de deux erreurs pour remplir les coussins avant que Marley Gaudet a frappé un simple au champ centre pour ajouter un point. L’équipe de l’Î.-P.-É. a de nouveau rempli les buts en début de septième avant de marquer son troisième point sur un lancer qui a atteint une frappeuse. Hustler a inscrit deux simples et Kate Doyle a ajouté un double pour l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, tandis que Kaiti Ellsworth a réussi deux simples pour la Nouvelle-Écosse. Andrea Caron a remporté le jeu blanc avec Temma Parson aux prises avec la défaite.
 
Québec 13 c. Terre-Neuve et Labrador 1
 
Le Québec a ouvert le pointage avec quatre points en première manche sur un double d’un point de Naomi Pelletier, un autre sur un simple d’Annabelle Guay et deux autres sur des erreurs. Terre-Neuve et Labrador s’est inscrit au tableau en fin de manche lorsque Shilo Chislett a commencé avec un triple et a marqué sur un roulant. Deux autres erreurs de Terre-Neuve ont mené à deux points du Québec en deuxième, tandis qu’Emily Meloche et Léa Fréchette ont chacune ajouté un simple d’un point suivi d’un double de deux points par Guay pour porter le pointage à 9 à 1. Bonnie Zachary a doublé et marqué sur un roulant pour le Québec en troisième, tandis qu’une erreur d’un point et un simple de deux points par Meloche en fin de cinquième ont complété le pointage. Jessica Mallette a remporté la victoire et Jordyn Rose a été marquée pour la défaite.
 
Ontario 13 c. Alberta 5
 
L’Ontario a forcé une triple égalité pour la première place de la division B avec une explosion offensive contre l’Alberta. Michaela Tuck et Kaitlyn Kim ont frappé des doubles consécutifs pour ouvrir la marque, et Kim a traversé le marbre sur un simple au troisième par Deanna Grahek. La manche suivante, l’Ontario a placé deux coureuses sur les buts avant que Katina Duscio a claqué un circuit de trois points vers la droite, puis a ajouté un autre point sur un mauvais lancer pour prendre une avance de 6 à 0. En quatrième, Duscio a doublé et marqué sur un simple de Kim avant que Sierra Baltzer a frappé un coup de deux points à droite. L’Alberta est revenu en fin de manche, commençant par un simple et un double avant qu’Avery Terpsma a frappé un simple d’un point au champ centre, suivi plus tard d’un roulant d’un point, d’un simple de Taylor Farrer et d’un double de Gabriela Coderre pour rendre la marque 9 à 4. L’Ontario a rempli les buts et a ajouté deux points sur un simple de Kim, puis a obtenu un triple de deux points de Kait Achtermaier. Paige Simpson a ouvert la fin de la cinquième avec un double et a marqué sur un simple de Katelyn Jeglum, mais c’était aussi proche qu’elles sont venues.
 
Dans le groupe A, la Colombie-Britannique (3-1) a terminé en première position sur le bris d’égalité en raison du nombre de points marqués contre (2) dans les matchs entre les équipes en égalité, tandis que le Manitoba (3-1) a pris la deuxième place en fonction de leur victoire contre la Saskatchewan (3-1). L’Île-du-Prince-Édouard (1-3) a terminé quatrième et la Nouvelle-Écosse (0-4) cinquième.
 
Dans le groupe B, le Québec (3-1) a pris la première place sur bris d’égalité pour avoir accordé le moins de points marqués contre (8), suivi de l’Ontario (3-1) qui a défait l’Alberta (3-1) dans leur match tête-à-tête. Le Nouveau-Brunswick (1-3) a pris la quatrième place, suivi de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador (0-4) en cinquième.
