ISU Officially Cancels World Short Track Championships in South Korea due to Coronavirus

World Championships could potentially be rescheduled to mid-October 2020

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The International Skating Union (ISU) has officially announced the cancellation of the 2020 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, which were set to take place next weekend in Seoul, South Korea.

On February 26, the ISU announced that the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, scheduled for March 13-15 in Seoul, South Korea, would not be staged as originally planned. This decision was made in light of the Coronavirus situation in South Korea, which forced authorities in the city of Seoul to close the Mokdong Ice Rink and order the cancellation of all planned competitions.

Since that announcement, the ISU evaluated the situation and concluded that, considering the current uncertain developments surrounding the Coronavirus, a rescheduling or relocation of the above-mentioned event within the current season, even if the season would be extended by several weeks after its normal end in early April, could not be reasonably considered.

Over the coming weeks, the ISU will evaluate, in cooperation with all stakeholders, whether the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2020 could possibly be held later in the year, but in any case not before mid-October 2020. A decision on this possibility will be announced as soon as possible by the ISU.

Considering the evolution of the Coronavirus globally over the past few weeks, Speed Skating Canada is fully supportive of the ISU’s decision to officially cancel the 2020 ISU World Short Track Championships. While the cancellation of this season’s most important short track competition is disappointing for our team, we believe the ISU made the right decision, one that protects the health and well-being of all participants, including the skaters. We would like to thank the ISU for their diligent work in evaluating this unique situation and commend them for their leadership in making such an important and difficult decision.

We will await further information from the ISU regarding the potential of rescheduling the competition during the 2020-2021 season and evaluate our team’s plans once the details are known.

L’ISU annule officiellement les championnats du monde courte piste en Corée du Sud en raison du coronavirus

Les championnats du monde pourraient être reportés à la mi-octobre 2020

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – L’International Skating Union (ISU) a officiellement annoncé l’annulation des Championnats du monde de patinage de vitesse courte piste 2020, qui devaient avoir lieu le week-end prochain à Séoul, en Corée du Sud.

Le 26 février, l’ISU a annoncé que les Championnats du monde courte piste, prévus du 13 au 15 mars à Séoul en Corée du Sud, ne se dérouleraient pas comme originalement programmés. Cette décision a été prise à la lumière de la situation du coronavirus en Corée du Sud, qui a conduit les autorités municipales de Séoul à fermer la patinoire de Mokdong et à ordonner l’annulation de toutes les compétitions prévues.

Depuis cette annonce, l’ISU a évalué la situation et a conclu que, tenant compte des développements incertains actuels à propos du coronavirus, le report ou le déplacement de la compétition susmentionnée au cours de la saison actuelle, même si elle devait être prolongée de plusieurs semaines après sa conclusion régulière au début du mois d’avril, ne pourrait pas être raisonnablement considéré.

En collaboration avec tous les intervenants, l’ISU évaluera au cours des prochaines semaines si les Championnats du monde de courte piste de l’ISU 2020 pourraient être organisés plus tard au cours de l’année, mais, peu importe les scénarios, pas avant la mi-octobre 2020. L’ISU gardera ses membres informés sur l’évaluation en cours et annoncera sa décision aussi tôt que possible.

Compte tenu de l’évolution à l’échelle mondiale du coronavirus ces dernières semaines, Patinage de vitesse Canada appuie entièrement la décision de l’ISU d’annuler officiellement les Championnats du monde courte piste de l’ISU 2020. Bien que l’annulation de la compétition la plus importante cette année en courte piste soit décevante pour notre équipe, nous croyons que l’ISU a pris la bonne décision, une décision qui protège la santé et le bien-être de tous les participants, notamment les patineurs. Nous désirons remercier l’ISU pour son travail consciencieux face à cette situation unique et nous la saluons pour son leadership dans la prise d’une décision aussi importante.

Nous attendrons d’autres informations de l’ISU relativement à la possible reprogrammation de la compétition au cours de la saison 2020-2021 et nous évaluerons les plans de notre équipe quand les détails seront connus.
