Individual and doubles archery continues in Santiago

SANTIAGO, CL – Day 3 of the official competition at the Pan and Parapan Am Championships was filled with para team and individual able-bodied matches. 

Kevin Evans and Rob Cox represented Canada in the compound men’s open doubles event of the Parapan Am Championships. Their first opponent was the Mexican team, who was ranked just above them in the qualification rounds. The Canadians held onto the lead throughout the match and won with a score of 143-137. That then advanced the doubles team into the semifinals against the top-qualified Brazilian team, and while the Canadians did fight hard, they dropped the match with a score of 134-146. This meant that they were then in the bronze medal match against the Colombians. Scores at the conclusion of each end were never separated by more than 2 points, so by all definitions a close match. Unfortunately, they did not manage to come out on top, but still finished the competition in 4th place. 

Andrew Azores shot against Luis Jaquez of Dominican Republic for his first match in the recurve men’s individual competition on the able-bodied side. He shot strong during each end and won the match, with a score of 6-0. For his second match, he faced off against his teammate Brian Maxwell, who had received a bye past the previous round of eliminations. Unfortunately, both Canadians couldn’t advance and Azores came out on top with a score of 6-2. Another recurve men’s athlete in action today was Eric Peters, whose first opponent was Bruce Arnold of the US Virgin Islands. He came out victorious with a score of 6-0. Peters then continued on to face off against Tomás Peña Leiva, who was shooting in his home country of Chile. After tying the second end, Peters emerged victorious with a score of 7-1. In the ⅛ elimination round, Peters and Azores faced off against each other, making for another double Canadian matchup. It was a tight match that took 5 ends to decide. Peters eventually won the match with a score of 6-4, but all ends were decided by less than 3 points. Peters then moved on to face #2-ranked Jorge Enriquez (COL) and while it was again another tight match, Enriquez took the win with a score of 6-4. Devaang Gupta, who received a bye past the first two rounds of eliminations, faced off against Mario Damian Jajarabilla of Argentina and won, 6-4. Gupta then went on to shoot against Angel Alvarado (MEX) and won the match with a score of 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Gupta was unable to hold off Cuban Hugo Franco from taking the win.

All four Canadians in the recurve women’s division were in action today. Virginie Chénier faced Guadalupe Caffaratti for her first match of the day. She won in four ends, taking the match 6-2. Her next opponent was Ana Machado, ranked right after her in the qualification round. It was a tight match; Chénier won the match with a score of 6-4 after five ends of shooting. Up next was her ⅛ elimination match against top-qualified Casey Kaufhold (USA). Once again, Chénier shot strong and forced the match to go to 5 ends. The Canadian archer shot strongly, but was unable to get the win needed to advance, only losing by two set points (4-6). Natalee Chan unfortunately dropped her first match in a very close tiebreaker. After both her and her opponent Florencia Leithold (ARG) gained 5 set points, they went into a one arrow shoot-off. Leithold had the closer arrow, scoring 10, while Chan shot a 9. She doesn’t move on but shot strong throughout her match. Eleanor Brug, who is attending her first international competition in Santiago, shot against Casay Casanova of Uruguay and won with a strong score of 6-0. She continued the successful shooting in her next match against Mexican Paulina Garza, winning the next match with a score of 6-2. Brug’s third match was equally successful, with a final score of 7-1 against Brazilian Ana Luiza Sliachticas Caetano. Brug then advanced to face Chan’s opponent Florencia Leithold and even though she lost the first two ends, she came back and won the last three, winning the overall match with a final score of 6-4. In the semifinals, Brug was against Ane Marcelle Dos Santos of Brazil to determine in which medal match she was going to compete. The ends were close, but Brug wasn’t able to hold onto the lead and lost the match, moving on to shoot in the bronze medal match on Sunday, November 27 at 2:42 p.m. local time (12:42 p.m. EST). Stephanie Barrett also won her first match with a score of 6-0 against Ecuadorian Aytana Guerra. Her next match was against Colombian Mariana Ospina Quintana and while the match was very close, Barrett was unable to pull off the win and will not advance further in the competition. 

Angela Foley, one of two Canadian barebow archers in this competition, unfortunately dropped her ⅛ elimination round match against #1-ranked athlete from the USA Christina Lyons. Brooke Daigle, the second half of the Canadian female barebow team, faced off against the #2-ranked athlete in this division, American Fawn Girard. It was a tough match, and unfortunately, Daigle was not able to advance.

In the afternoon, the men’s compound individual athletes took to the shooting line. Shooting versus Pedro Salazar of Guatemala was Canadian Cameron Palichuk, who emerged as the winner of this match-up. The score was 144-140. Unfortunately, Palichuk then dropped his next match against Jagdeep Singh Mejia (COL), with a final score of 146-144. Tristan Spicer-Moran was originally scheduled to shoot against Diego Quesada Arias of Costa Rica, however, due to his opponent not starting the match, he advanced onto the next round. #2-ranked Nick Kappers (USA) awaited Spicer-Moran in the second round, and unfortunately Adachi wasn’t able to pull the win, losing with a score of 149-145. Jordan Adachi, who received a bye to the second elimination round due to his high score in the qualifications, faced Brandon Gonzalez Vargas of Costa Rica. He was not able to come out on top and dropped the match with a score of 139-144. Austin Taylor shot against Sherwin Francis from Trinidad and Tobago for his first match of the day; the final score was 146-140 in favour of the Canadian. He continued on to face off against Luccas Abreu of Brazil, and he emerged from the match victorious with a score of 147-145. In the ⅛ elimination round, his opponent was Bryan Alvarado of Puerto Rico. Taylor maintained a lead, albeit a small one, throughout the match and carried that to a winning final score of 145-144. Unfortunately, in the next match, the scores were reversed against his next opponent Miguel Becerra (MEX), meaning Taylor did not advance past the ¼ finals.

Le tir à l’arc individuel et en double se poursuit aux Championnats panaméricains et parapanaméricains

SANTIAGO, CL – La troisième journée de la compétition officielle des Championnats panaméricains et parapanaméricains a été marquée par des matchs para par équipes et des matchs individuels sans handicap. 

Kevin Evans et Rob Cox ont représenté le Canada dans l’épreuve masculine ouverte de doubles mixtes d’arc à poulies des Championnats parapanaméricains. Leur premier adversaire était l’équipe mexicaine, qui était classée juste au-dessus d’eux lors des qualifications. Les Canadiens ont conservé l’avantage tout au long du match et l’ont emporté sur le score de 143-137. Ce résultat a permis à l’équipe de double d’accéder aux demi-finales contre l’équipe brésilienne la mieux qualifiée. Bien que les Canadiens se soient battus avec acharnement, ils ont perdu le match sur le score de 134-146. Cela signifiait qu’ils se retrouvaient dans le match pour la médaille de bronze contre les Colombiens. Les scores à la fin de chaque volée n’ont jamais été séparés de plus de 2 points, donc par toutes les définitions, ce fut un match serré. Malheureusement, ils n’ont pas réussi à s’imposer, mais ont tout de même terminé la compétition à la 4e place.

Andrew Azores a tiré contre Luis Jaquez de la République Dominicaine pour son premier match dans la compétition individuelle des hommes d’arc recourbé du côté sans handicap. Il a tiré fort pendant chaque volée et a gagné le match, avec un score de 6-0. Pour son deuxième match, il a affronté son coéquipier Brian Maxwell, qui avait reçu un laissez-passer après la ronde précédente d’éliminations. Malheureusement, les deux Canadiens n’ont pas pu avancer et Azores s’est imposé avec un score de 6-2. Un autre athlète masculin d’arc recourbé en action aujourd’hui était Eric Peters, dont le premier adversaire était Bruce Arnold des îles Vierges américaines. Il est sorti victorieux avec un score de 6-0. Peters a ensuite affronté Tomás Peña Leiva, qui tirait dans son pays d’origine, le Chili. Après avoir fait match nul dans la deuxième volée, Peters est sorti vainqueur avec un score de 7-1. Dans la ⅛ ronde éliminatoire, Peters et Azores se sont affrontés, ce qui a donné lieu à un autre double affrontement canadien. C’était un match serré qui a pris 5 volées pour se décider. Peters a finalement gagné le match avec un score de 6-4, mais toutes les volées ont été décidées par moins de 3 points. Peters a ensuite affronté Jorge Enriquez (COL), classé deuxième, et bien que le match ait été serré, Enriquez l’a emporté sur le score de 6-4. Devaang Gupta, qui a reçu un laissez-passer pour les deux premières rondes éliminatoires, a affronté Mario Damian Jajarabilla de l’Argentine et a gagné 6-4. Gupta a ensuite tiré contre Angel Alvarado (MEX) et a remporté le match avec un score de 6-2. En quart de finale, Gupta n’a pas pu empêcher le Cubain Hugo Franco de remporter la victoire.

Les quatre Canadiennes de la division féminine d’arc recourbé étaient en action aujourd’hui. Virginie Chénier a affronté Guadalupe Caffaratti pour son premier match de la journée. Elle a gagné en quatre volées, remportant le match 6-2. Son adversaire suivante était Ana Machado, classée juste après elle dans le tour de qualification. Ce fut un match serré ; Chénier a remporté le match avec un score de 6-4 après cinq volées de tir. Le match suivant était sa ⅛ ronde éliminatoire contre Casey Kaufhold (É.-U.), la mieux qualifiée. Encore une fois, Chénier a tiré fort et a forcé le match à aller à 5 volées. L’archère canadienne a tiré fort, mais n’a pas pu obtenir la victoire nécessaire pour avancer, perdant seulement par deux points de set (4-6). Natalee Chan a malheureusement perdu son premier match dans un tie-break très serré. Après qu’elle et son adversaire Florencia Leithold (ARG) aient gagné 5 points de set, elles se sont disputées une flèche. Leithold a eu la flèche la plus proche, avec un score de 10, tandis que Chan a tiré un 9. Elle ne se déplace pas mais a tiré fort tout au long de son match. Eleanor Brug, qui participe à sa première compétition internationale à Santiago, a tiré contre Casay Casanova de l’Uruguay et a gagné avec un score fort de 6-0. Elle a continué à tirer avec succès lors de son match suivant contre la Mexicaine Paulina Garza, qu’elle a remporté sur le score de 6-2. Le troisième match de Brug a été tout aussi réussi, avec un score final de 7-1 contre la Brésilienne Ana Luiza Sliachticas Caetano. Brug a ensuite affronté Florencia Leithold, l’adversaire de Chan, et même si elle a perdu les deux premières volées, elle est revenue et a gagné les trois derniers, remportant le match sur le score final de 6-4. En demi-finale, Brug était opposée à Ane Marcelle Dos Santos du Brésil pour déterminer dans quel match de médaille elle allait participer. Les finales ont été serrées, mais Brug n’a pas été en mesure de conserver son avance et a perdu le match, ce qui lui permettra de participer au match pour la médaille de bronze le dimanche 27 novembre à 14h42, heure locale (12h42 HNE). Stephanie Barrett remporte également son premier match avec un score de 6-0 contre l’Équatorienne Aytana Guerra. Son match suivant était contre la Colombienne Mariana Ospina Quintana et bien que le match ait été très serré, Barrett n’a pas été en mesure de l’emporter et n’ira pas plus loin dans la compétition. 

Angela Foley, l’une des deux archères canadiennes d’arc nu dans cette compétition, a malheureusement perdu son ⅛ match de ronde éliminatoire contre l’athlète américaine classée no 1, Christina Lyons. Brooke Daigle, la seconde moitié de l’équipe féminine canadienne d’arc nu, a affronté l’athlète classée n°2 dans cette division, l’américaine Fawn Girard. Ce fut un match difficile, et malheureusement, Daigle n’a pas pu avancer.

Dans l’après-midi, les athlètes individuels de l’équipe masculine d’arc à poulies ont pris place sur la ligne de tir. Le Canadien Cameron Palichuk a affronté le Guatémaltèque Pedro Salazar et est sorti vainqueur de ce duel. Le score était de 144-140. Malheureusement, Palichuk a ensuite perdu son match suivant contre Jagdeep Singh Mejia (COL), avec un score final de 146-144. Tristan Spicer-Moran devait initialement tirer contre Diego Quesada Arias du Costa Rica, mais comme son adversaire n’a pas commencé le match, il est passé au tour suivant. Nick Kappers (USA), classé deuxième, attendait Spicer-Moran au deuxième tour, et malheureusement, Adachi n’a pas été en mesure de remporter la victoire, perdant sur le score de 149-145. Jordan Adachi, qui a reçu un laissez-passer pour le deuxième tour d’élimination en raison de son score élevé lors des qualifications, a affronté Brandon Gonzalez Vargas du Costa Rica. Il n’a pas réussi à s’imposer et a perdu le match sur un score de 139-144. Austin Taylor a affronté Sherwin Francis de Trinité-et-Tobago pour son premier match de la journée ; le score final était de 146-140 en faveur du Canadien. Taylor a maintenu une avance, bien que faible, tout au long du match et l’a portée jusqu’au score final de 145-144. Malheureusement, dans le match suivant, les scores ont été inversés contre son adversaire suivant Miguel Becerra (MEX), ce qui signifie que Taylor n’a pas passé les ¼ de finale.
